my new puffer, feeding help needed

hello, i got a new blue spotted toby puffer yesterday, he is 4-5 inchs, i fed him brine shrimp and garlic yesterday, i got him some gamma frozen cockles today, do i defrost them before feeding him? also how many time a day would you feed this size puffer? does he need cockles everyday? also i can not get live cockles in shells, can i feed live or frozen musscles in shells to help keep his teeth down?? many thanks

frozen is ok.. thawed in tank water.

Give only what it will eat and remove the rest. Muscles are good if it will tank them as is shrimp (uncooked and frozen), but I highly doubt the value of shrimp keeping the teeth in check.

so i can just drop a frozen cockel in the tank and wait maybe 10 minuites and remove the rest? should i do this once a day and one feed of brine shrimp or more? are musscles off the fresh counter in tesco ok to bring home and freeze and then give him maybe twice a week direct from the freezer? or defrost in tank water befor giving them to him? thnaks

Always thaw the food in a cup with some tank water. You can just drop it in or crack it open for him before dropping it in the tank.

If the muscles are fresh then you have to freeze them first to kill any nasties. Again thaw in a cup with tank water.

thanks, do you no can i keep a gsp in with him or will they just fight? this puffer is very relaxed he lives with some snails red legged hermits and a cleaner shrimp, the shrimp and puffer get along like long lost twins

Tobies don't have very big stomachs, so it's best for them to be fed small amounts a few times a day. I feed mine frozen mysis about 3 times a day, about once a week I'll feed her a couple of ghost shrimp just to help keep her beak in check. They'll also eat seaweed sheets and pick at algae.

I suppose it varies between the temperaments of the individual fish, but the general consensus is that tobies don't get along with other puffers and absolutely hate each other, so I'd recommend against adding a GSP with your blue spotted.
