Difference between congo, arrowhead, and hairy puffer

Post by trever22 »

I dont really see a big difference between a congo, arrowhead, and hairy puffer. Maybe a stupid question but I am just curious what the main differences are between them since they look the same. This is a serious question and any response helps Thanks :D

Thanks,
Trever

Although all are ambush predators, they really don't look the same to me.
Have you checked them out in our Pufferpedia?

I did check out the pufferpedia, They all about get the same size they all have the same pH, they are all comfortable in the same temperature range and to me they all look about the same. I dont know maybe its just me. But out of the 3 you would probably suggest the congo right?

I love them all! ;) The hairy will be the most difficult to find, after a bright red Congo. The pignose will be the more common but still difficult to find.

The hairy has beautiful pink marbling on it's skin & of course, those cool skin tabs.
The pignose has a lovely long snout & to me looks like a dog.
The Congo has that really cute upturned mouth & comes in lovely colors. It is also very good at camouflage.

I suggest trying to look for all three and taking whichever one you can find first. You can occasionally find nice Hairy's on Aquabid along with the rare congo and suvatti. Thatpetplace.com generally gets a fairly good selection of puffers and their stock is usually good quality, if you check there often and you're quick you can snag one of the three you're looking for. If not see if one of the better LFS in your area can talk to their supplier, sometimes they get lucky and find them.

All these guys are kind of a difficult find because of their native location. The Congo, obviously from the Congo river basin, is hard to get depending on the political stability of the area. Hairy's and Suvatti's are both from the Mekong river and it's watershed. Depending on what the weather is like and how difficult it is to get in to the area it can be real difficult to find them, easier than the Congo though.

I really love my Suvatti, his attitude reminds me of the Bulldog on the Bugs Bunny Show, so much that I named him after the cartoon charecter: Marc Antony.

Aquabid just had a Congo puffer for sale about aweek ago. They pop up every once in awhile so I would keep looking there off and on. I also see Hairy puffers there often too. Next puffer that I might get is a hairy or a congo.

I agree with Dad, you'd love any of the 3 you find.
