Feeding a GSP Squid

Hey everyone,

I noticed in the feeding section that frozen squid was not listed, I saw some in the grocery store the other day and decided to give some to my gsp, just cut off a chunk and thawed it in some tank water. He LOVES it, I've had him on mussels (which he picks at slowly) and bloodworms (which he loves but at 2 inches isn't really enough food for him, this seems like a much better option. Anyone thats having troubles feeding their puffer may want to try this, a large pack of squid was $4 so its worth a shot!

I recently bought a bag of frozen mixed seafood bits, and my gsp eats only the shrimp, dangit.

The bag includes mussels (out of shell), squid tentacles, and squid mantle, and Puff won't touch any of those, regardless of whether I soak them in Vitachem (which he seems to like).

I try to sneak him some of the non-shrimp seafood out of that mix and he bites it once, then spits it out and stares at me while he bobs up and down for the *real* food. Sigh.

I do fast him 1 day a week, but other than him disliking that seafood mix, I have no problem getting him to eat... besides the Vitachem-soaked shrimp, he devours, on a rotating basis: mussels-on-the-half-shell, crab leg meat, and snails.

He just really doesn't care for the squid, even the day after his fast.

Ridiculous how picky each individual gsp is, well im glad I found what mine likes!

My Fahaka is weird... He eats crays, snails, mussels on the half shell (can't help but think about Ninja Turtles ) and even Dainichi pellets. He won't touch krill (even though the pellets are "ultima krill") and I've never tried squid.

My Ceylon will eat frozen krill, feeders (bred cons, so they're safe) rams, mts, mussels on the half shell, crab and almost anything else. He won't touch pellets or algae wafers though.

It's my opinion that puffers are picky from one individual to the next. Fun stuff

Actually I have had a lot of fish that loved squid. But I am not fond of working with it. Most o my poffers have taken it eagerly - when I am willing to deal with it myself. Squid tend to stink.

RE human consumption - rubbery texture is a sign of over or under cooking. If you are served rubbery squid, send it back. It should be tender.

I hung out with a school of squid in the Caribbean, and they were just as curious about me as I was about them. Thereafter, I have to avert my eyes whenever a dinner companion orders the calamari... I'm afraid I'll recognize one of them.

I have never had octopus, but I have to admit a fondness for squid. That is one thing I do miss from being retired - the area where I worked for the last number of years had several good places to eat with excellent calamari appetizers...

Octopus is excellent. Much better than squid especially if prepared correctly. Sorry PP.
