Ceylon puffers

Post by lovinpuffers »

Was wondering if anyone had mixed figure 8s, green spotted and ceylon puffers?
If yes how did it work out, in terms of the health of the fish
If not a good idea why not?

I have a (2.5") green spotted puffer, a small (.75") green spotted puffer and a small (.75") figure eight puffer, they are happy and healthy but I really want to get a ceylon as well and thought if they could cohabitate then I would move other fish around and give them one of my bigger tanks together. I know as an adult the GSP needs much higher salt content then the figure 8s do, and he would have to be eventually moved to an almost full salt enviorment but in the meantime. The three are in the same tank with a knight goby with no problems at all right now.

What size is the tank? :o :o :o

The figure 8 has different water requirements. The Ceylon will kill others ( I have one that is full grown 8" and will kill anything that enters his tank). I suggest 1 tank (75 gal) for the 2 GSPs and a least a 55 gal for the single Ceylon.

I agree with geronimo.....

F8's are low end brackish,....GSP's and Ceylons are high end brackish to full marine....and GSP's and Ceylons are very aggressive towards tankmates

I have kept 2 adult GSP & 1 Ceylon together. It all depends on the individual puffer. Best to start them out as juvies. I would not put adults together otherwise.

If you have a large enough tank you could try GSPs and ceylons together though you'll need to be prepared for things heading south fast. F8s will never fit into that mess though.

Okay thanks,
How big would you wait for the GSP to go full marine with? Can they be in with others saltwater puffers?
Sorry for all the questions,
Reading the information on this site I'm finding a most of the things I thought were correct certainly are not.
As for tanks size:
I have a 47, a corner 55 so it has a much larger footprint then most 55, a 37, a 16 growout with a couple sm blue jacks in it, a 10 with dwarf shrimp and otto cats, and another 10. Plus a 55 saltwater, I know I need to upgrade as Sid gets bigger.

You don't have a tank large enough for 2 adult GSPs. I would think a corner tank would have a smaller footprint than a standard, long tank.

yeah I'm getting that, the information I had been following is not the same as what I'm getting here. I'm sure as the people here actually have these guys that this information is correct. That would be why I joined this site and asked my questions. As for the GSP pair that I have, I have time to figure out the smaller one so first thing I need to worry about is the larger of the two. From reading the inforamtion in your library, I have all three of the puffers in tanks to small for them. For example the information provided to me was a 10 - 15 gallon tank was big enough for two figure 8's for life. A 30 - 40 gallon was enough for two GSP. These were not the least amount required space either, the information on the Ceylon was alot more off then these.

I am under the impression that as the 55 corner is shorter than a traditional 55 that it takes up more area space, I purchased it because of that extra footprint and also it fit perfectly. The place I ordered it from also showed the specs for both type of tanks and the numbers agreed with their claims. Now, that being said, it is possible that you are correct, although I really really hope not.

It may have a larger footprint but with less room for bursts of speed and playing. It depends on the height too.

Unfortunately a lot of people come here in a situation similar to yours. Think of the poor people who come on here that got a GSP for a 1gal tank... Yikes. Thankfully, the vast majority of people do what they can to keep their puffers healthy and ready for a long quality life. If they can't provide that then many rehome some so they can provide better for the others.

just makes me angry as I did research them, and asked people who should have had the right information.
So I guess I need to move some fish around to give them more room.

Thanks for all your help

They are so dang cute and personable, I tried puffers years ago and they all died :{
So stayed with the cichlidds, dwarf shrimp and stuff like that. Just kept finding them so cute and fun to watch. Have some Blue Jack Dempseys and they are doing fine. Figured if I could keep picky cichlids they way they should be kept, then I chould do the puffers. Did try to get the correct information, talked with a few people who keep puffers and thought I had researched enough to take care of them properly.
Guess that was not quite correct.
Well on the positive side I guess I have a good excuse to purchase a bigger tank :D

I know that some say it's impossible to sex these puffers but i am pretty sure i have a female and a male in a tank together... they sometimes exhibit spawning behaviors, never nip at each other. It's quite interesting. Does anyone know the size they have to be to reach sexual maturation.
