Anybody else spend their evening doing blizzard prep? I did precautionary WC's on all my tanks in case the power goes out, figured it would buy me a few hours on the ammonia spike I've been imagining... JW... Stressing about my wet pets. The snow is halfway to my knees on our front porch!
I've been having nightmares about Zombie Apocalypse, having to steal a generator and keep puffs in a Rubbermaid in a van , and have read posts from people whose fish froze to death during outages...
Good thing classes start again tomorrow, clearly I've been watching fish all day(s).

Good luck with the snow up there. They are calling for snow and ice down here . I hate that word "ice" after that huge ice storm that wiped out all my fishes plus on top of other things like trying to keep my family warm.

It's just snow here so I'm pretty positive we won't have major power issues. I wish we had a generator too though.

That's awesome, PP! I'm lucky that my tanks are still small and FW (so far, LOL).
I've got a bucket and an empty, intact spare 10 gal for puffs ready to haul and set up at a neighbor's if we need to... One of my pleco's lived in a bucket for a week once while I medicated his tank mates (now I have a QT tank). Not ideal, but you can just hang up a canister filter or use a little submersible one and keep an eye on things... that was summer, though! It's gotta be better than what they go through during shipping, poor guys... The tropicals definitely can't go in the 10 gal, into buckets for them is the worst case scenario right now, I hope!

I have the best hubby in the world! Cut his luncheon short & wolfed down his sandwich to get home so we could pick up the generator. $60 for 2 days insurance that I don't lose everything in my 6 tanks, is well worth it.

Don't you have the hand crank water pumps? I actually bought a small generator to run my tanks for situations just like this. We get random power outages and some pretty heavy snow, so far I've had to use it twice. I have the house wired to it and it's vented to the outside. Two standard plugs by each tank to run circulation pumps/filters and the heater.
"Darwin swings...annnnnnd a miss. Boy Jim, Chuck's suffered at the plate tonight. He's 0 for 3 and I'm not sure he's recovered from that shoulder pull a few weeks ago. I'll bet the front office is re-thinking that contract."

@ Dad--I'd never even heard of those! Makes sense, though... My boyfriend's quite a tinkerer (physics major), he just suggested "hamster wheel-powered" pumps We have those 10 fancy rats just waiting for my snakes to get bigger (rat pinkies, not my pets)... HA. Pets powering pets... Who's keeping whom?

My lights keep flickering and it scares me a bit. I have a way to warm the room a bit if the power goes out. All of my fish are in one room except my peaceful community 55g. Push comes to shove I can spit that tank up between my 29g DP and 10g QT tank and move them into the warmer room. I can move my DPs to another 10g I have running.
So what is the minimum safe temperature for most fish before causing damage or death?
Here's an idea I had a while back to get some movement through a HOB filter. I think a larger diameter lift hose would have more water flow. I also think it could be used with a canister filter using an UGF lift tube and air stone attached to the canister's output hose. WoW.....I guess we're used to the snow up here (down here?) in Canada. I've got 4 ft of snow in my yard and the snow-drifts are 6 ft high in some places where they have cleared the streets. We just keep on trucking.....

as far as temp goes....as long as the water is slowly cooled and then slowly re-heated again,...most fish can survive down to the 60's(F) IME
