They really need at least 24" of turning room front to back.

Unfortunately it's too small. Do you know the dimensions?

Mine is in a tank that is 72" x 24" x 22" (high). He loves it. He has grown a bunch since he's had the space!!!

48x24x24, 120 gallons, or better 72x24x24, 180 gallons.

I like the idea of a 180gal. Some people have mentioned that their fahakas have been stunted in a 120gal tank.

The turn around room is key, as RTR stated... but I also find that length plays a big roll. My Fahaka loves to have "bursts of speed" where he'll swipe his tail hard and shoot across the length of the tank. Just an observation....

The shorter tank technically is adequate, but it really does not offer much swimming room for a juvenile or an adult Fahaka. The fish in the smaller tank may not have the normal configuration. Normal Fahakas are streamlined - which implies a lot more fast swimming and depth changes than say a T. mbu.

More controlled current in the smaller tank is likely important, with high current areas and relatively calm areas for both exercise and rest. If you opt for the smaller tank. you have to be more certain of the currents you provide to compensate as much as possible for the shorter length.

Really, no active fish should be in a tank less than 3x its total adult length. But If I said that Fahakas need minimum T. mbu housing as well, nobody would pay any attention to me at all. I would much prefer to say 5x or more times its expected length and more than 2x its adult size for front-to-back measures for turning. But that would pretty much remove both those fish from being in the hobby at all.

Now I know I am going to get "scolded" for saying this but I've had my fahaka in a 29 gallon tank for around a year now. He is about 8-10 inches and to be honest I've never had problems with him running into the sides of the tank.. But i do know once he reaches a slightly bigger size I will upgrade him into my 75 and so on. At what size would you guys think would be a good move. He has plenty of room to turn around, a nice hiding spot and surprisingly plenty of open swimming water. Any suggestions?

Mine was moved from the 55g, when he was 7", into his 125g. Move now.

I moved mine from his 75 gallon at about 3.5-4 inches. I suggest you move him as fast as possible. Mine didn't seem to grow much in the 75.. Once he hit the 150, his growth exploded. Your fahaka should probably be bigger than 7" if it's over a year old IMO.

Too many hobbyists ignore stunting - and not just of puffers. Clown loaches are abused equally badly, and more commonly. Not to mention Knife fishes and Arowanas and most other large fish.

Yeah he will be moved here shortly... And for his growth he is about 8 in. Without the tail. Don't worry I didn't plan on harming him with this little tank!
