Which puffer (40 gallon) ?

Post by FINpuffer »

Hello

Which of the following puffer you would recommend to 150 liter aquarium (is it 40 gallon?) ?

Monotretus turgidus
Auriglobus modestus
Tetraodon cochinchinensis

I'm not sure is the tank big enough for those?
pH = 7
dH = 5...7
(fresh water)

First I have thought Tetraodon suvattii -puffer, but I can't find any, those three are available.

If you can tell some differences between turgidus, modestus and cochinchinensis I'm grateful. And sorry of my bad english...

Any one of those will work in a 40. You could probably do 2 modestus.

In terms of care, there is no real difference between the turdigus or the cochinchinensis. There are differences in their appearances. You would need to post a picture to get a good identification because they are similar in appearances. It can take an expert to tell the difference between the two PLUS there are other puffers similar to them as well

My vote is 2 modestus but make sure you buy the smallest 2.

I would go for a Tetraodon cochinchinensis (Fang's) :D .

Thank you!

I read A. modestus -article from pufferpedia. I didn't found any information about water hardeness. (dH) Isn't it so important for puffers? I think 2 modestus' would be my choice, but the article said that "not fish" on diet. What is the reason for that? And how difficult is modestus, does it have some special habits or requirements?

#1 issue with the modestus is they will need regular teeth trimming, about 2-3x/year: library/hospital/dentistry/

Hardness is not an issue. Weekly water changes of 50% is highly recommended, so whatever your tap water is at, is where the puffers will stay.

That is true. I got one Modestus and overgrowth of teeth is a problem. I do feed him shell food but still.

How about turgidus and cochinchinensis then? I think I would manage with the teeth trimming, but if I can escape that process, it would be nice. :)

Either of them would be fine but both are quite sedentary & live in their cave most of the time, except for feeding.

Only one turgidus or can I try two? Has the turgidus the same teeth "problem" than modestus, with shell food too?

I would definitely keep them as singletons. Their teeth aren't as bad as the modestus but still needs crunchy foods.
