Have you ever heard of making a tank out of a non glass material, say something significantly more flexible like plastic or something?

I was also thinking of doing a DIY tank build, not sure what type of glass to use.. I know to stay away from tempered glass if you are going to drill.

I also thought of using double paned window glass but there is apparently a gas between the panes that expires in 5~15 years

Float glass with a polished edge.

Hi Guys

Ive been really interested in this topic, You guys in the states seem to have for better access to tank builders than we do over in lil england

Im looking at getting a custom tank built from acrylic in a qtr circle or corner tank style. You can buy them off the shelf but not at the size im after, Im looking at a 4ft tall one.

From what Ive found out sofar, there a 36" rule that everyone over here seems to stick by, being that a average tank size of 6ft long x 18" deep cant be taller than 36" otherwise you have to use thicker glass, thats when it starts getting expensive

Acrylic is more expensive than glass but it is clearer and seemless, ie they can make any shape you like without having to silicone the edges, the tanks are normally made as one piece, and they do look the nuts, but they aint cheap

There is only one or two tank builders over here that will entertain a tall bow front corner tank, I still dont know why, but it seems to be a forever ending search to find someone to build me one, even when i tell people I dont care how much it costs just build it.

Ill keep you posted on how I get on but for now Ive attached my tank blueprints of what Im after if anyone knows anyone who could build me one.

Just a quick Q... are you sure you want that corner 90 degrees? It will fit perfectly into the corner but it wont allow you any space for the cables.

If you went over 90 degrees the sides would hug the walls and you'd have space in the back to dangle the cables.

The problem with that theory is that you'd need to unplug stuff occasionally and it would become inaccessible.

With regards to length, height etc.. Euro Bracing will work nicely if you go over the limits a little.

Hi Thanks for replying, I was going to have some electrical points fitted high above the hood in a waterproof junction box so I wouldnt have any cables running down the back and I was (at the moment atleast) going to use an internal filter rather than external but I'm still toying with that Idea, as of yet I haven't found any internals man enough for the job other than the Juwel Internal filters, any suggestions would be welcome

Have you tried neptunes acylic tanks?
They seem to have some of the best looking seamless acrylic tanks if you have the cash.

Hi Hilly,

Funnily enough, they came back to me today with a very reasonable quote of £700, which unless I can find anything better im going to go with them.

Now that bits done, I just looking into filtration. Im going with an arcadia luminar lighting which comes in at £100 so really Im going to be looking at a full custom setup for a Grand which I think is brilliant considering you'd pay that kind of money or an off the shelf model.

Does anyone know what kind of lph Id need for a 500 litre tank?, best Ive found is an 600lph for £200

HI ,this i do not recomend it at all . fish tank should be made by professionals. home made tanks are hazzards waiting to happen ..... food for thought.

Have you ever seen the kind of folks at these factories putting together tanks? It doesn't take a rocket scientist... Most really large tanks are custom made.

yes it's not rocket science but it is an aquired skill . and yes there are many capable of doing it but do remember this .. If someone is asking how ( they are not capable ) ..plz do consider care when giving advice, mainly when there is risk of someone getting hurt ......
