Fan Shrimp Species Profile Draft (Please comment)

Post by J-P »

Species Profiles:

Scientific Name: Atyopsis moluccensis
IMG_1212b.jpg
IMG_1210b.jpg
Common Names: Fan Shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp, Wood Shrimp, Flower Shrimp, Marble Shrimp

Min tank size: 20 US gallons ** Must be a mature tank. New establishments are not recomended **

Tank Temp: (Aprox) 72 - 82 F

Parameters : Ph should be as stable as possible. Ammonia 0; Nitrites 0; Nitrates <20

Typical Adult Size: 2 inches including the tail

Profile: Fan shrimp are filter feeders. As they have no claws, their apendges end in fine feather like fronds. They use these fronds to collect micro organisims from the water column. Typically they prefer to feed near the filter outlets and intakes where the flow is stronger. It is suggested that driftwood and taller plants be placed near these area in order for the Fan Shrimp to perch and feed. It is also noted that if Fan Shrimp are forraging the substrate for food then they are being inadequately fed. It is advised that should this be the case it is possible that they will damage the fronds used to skim the water of the micro organisms. Most, if not all specimins found in the aquarium trade have been wild caught in South East Asia.

Breeding: TBA: If you have bread these in captivity, please let us know.

Feeding:

General: ground flake food (pre disolved), Daphnia fry, brine shrimp fry, and ground up algae wafers via syringe or pipette is suggested (targeted feeding).

Specialized: Shirakura Chi Ebi, Borneo Wild Bebi, **others TBA**

SFAIK, the entire group develops as planktonic larvae in SW, so are expected to be difficult to breed in captivity. But as Amano shrimp can be captive bred, so should the filter-feeder shrimp respond to quite similar handling. All these critters (along with certain snails) are a major challenge for the interested breeder, but not at all impossible. It is impractical rather than impossible. Commercially it completely impractical. All of the long-arm shrimp (other than the red-claw Macrobrium species) are in the same breeding pattern - they have an obligate planktonic phase with multiple stages.

If co-housed with Amano or other routine breeding shrimp which cannot complete their life cycle in FW, the filter feeders relish the freshly released fry of the Amano shrimp and other similar species. Those females pick filter outlets to release the tiny fry, and the filter feeders perch downstream to harvest them.

The comment on substrate mopping is excellent.

FWIW, my best fan shrimp have been housed in a circulating range in the tank immediately downstream of the 24/7 lighted daphnia tank. Small numbers of daphnia washed downstream 24/7. Apparently that gave ideal feeding conditions for the fan shrimp. Jockeying for the best driftwood or rock positions was keen.

Spirulina powder is good supplemental food.

Aren't flower shrimps different?
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

from my research.. no they are not. They are just a different common name, but those names change / vary from region to region.

The pics of flower shrimp are red, which are fan shrimp / bamboo shrimp that has similar species in the tank. They change color from brown to red if females or other males are in the tank.

My 2 change color when in close proximity... I believe they are both male. It is strange but not uncommon.

Have you been drinking during that post? LOL!! that is ok... the 20 gal min comes from the fact that they are filter feeders and need a lot of stuff to sift through. A 10 gal will work if it is a high volume tank. The guys I have are in my 500 and 1 is always near the outlet. We're pushing nearly 4000 gals per hour on my pump and there he sits. I was surprised that he could take the pressure but he is there day in and day out in the same pitch. The other is near the intake and does the same thing. Day in and day out... just sitting there on a high powered pump. When they moult the go to a different area and do their business and return to their "spot".

In a 10 gal that would have to be a "dirty" tank for them not do starve.

It is a very good article.
I had one of these guys in a ten gallon for about 3 years. Mr. Robert helped me figure out how to feed him otherwise he would have starved in the first year. After he molted he often would have a nice red color on his legs and stripes. Most of the articles I have found on filter shrimp inform you it is bad if the shrimp is picking on the bottom for food. However, there really is nothing which tells you how to feed properly. Liquid and frozen foods seemed to work best for me. Although my cardinals made me mad when they figured out how to eat the liquid foods. Don't think I would keep them again unless I had a bigger tank or multiple connected tanks. But I really enjoyed him.
