I know when I first started talking in here, well lets just say it was like being attacked by a pack of wild dogs..lol. I can see what Purplecandle is saying though. Mbu are very large puffers that I have read (and done pretty good online research on them myself) and trying to house 1 properly is a heck of a job and a half when growing into adulthood. 12 fry would just be almost impossible to house alone in their own huge tanks unless you have very very large tanks. Thats why I mentioned a large indoor pool. I also noticed you metioned that you was going to grow them at certain size and maybe sale them or most? I hope everything works out for you and those mbu fry. Btw, what kinds of foods are you feeding them?
Thanks for the heads up.
Guess i know now why there are those who just come in here for the contents and contribute nothing.
Cause sometimes things are just better kept unsaid.
They are now living on frozen worms, live small snails and hikari's dalphina.

Sorry, I misunderstood also. I thought your puffer "gave birth". Then now I realized that they are egg layers and not live bearers.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of job do you do that takes you to all these different countries? When I was in IT, we flew to a few different countries a few times a year. I loved it. Hated the job, loved the travel.
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

I don’t think purplecandle is attacking or being mean at all to StriGoi . The puffer forum prides itself on a place to come for correct information which might not be the information many want to hear. StriGoi I do believe you have the best interest of your pets at heart. Let's stay on-topic and limit this discussion to fishkeeping.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

No your MBU is NOT ok in 187 gallon tank. You may think a 5 foot tank is big, but it is not. Your MBU will live a shortened life most likely deformed in some way and will never be able to become the majestic beast he is supposed to be. That is a travesty, it is animal abuse, and that is your fault..and for that reason you should not be allowed own another 12 MBUs, even if they are little. You stated earlier you intended to keep them...so they will get big.
No, I will not PM you because I want others who may read what you are doing to know that it is wrong, it sad, it is abuse.
Write your journal, I do not care. But if you post it, be prepared for me and others to rip it to sheds..because it is invalid and unreliable and will have no value. It will only serve as a documentation of your disregard to animal welfare.
I have seen pictures of one of your tanks. I thought it was beautiful. You probably have other nice tanks as well. So, I do not think you are a bad fish keeper all together. But, a MBU in less than 200 gallons of water IS bad fish keeping, and then owning 12 more MBUs IS is twelve times more bad fish keeping. I can understand if you had one MBU and did not know it was going to get big...But you do know and that is what is wrong here.
I would love to see pictures of MBU fry, so would others here. But, I am not going to pretend that what you are doing is a good thing. Unless you can tell us that your first MBU will be in a bigger tank and that your other 12 MBUs will be in big tanks....Hint, 200 gallons is not big.
I don't know why so many people here are being nice to you about this whole thing, but I am not going to be one of those people until you do the right thing.
I agree 100 %
just because you can dont mean you should. plus the fact that +12 fryes in your tank means -12 fryes in the wild
and you are not even adressing that . please keep your journal as a scrapbook because IMO it wont be worth much more then scrap with no other value then possibly make some people think its ok to misstreat mbu just cuz they "so cute". i wonder what other kind of animal abuse goes on your farm.
As we don't know what his plans are as of yet, but raising 12 fry to about 4" would gross $ 2000 over the course of a few months, if that is what his plans are. But we don't know. We don't know if he will keep them until adulthood or sell them as juvies. We don't know if he has the means to house them in the future.
I know PC isn't very PC but that's why we love her Provide options. Learn, Discover, Teach. Learn how to make the arrangements possible (even if for the sort term); discover new methods and technology that will help other in the long run; teach how to keep them.

I am just not sure how your LFS (Local Fish Store) over in the states and canada house their fishes.
In singapore where i work the LFS here CRAMP, MIX all type of species in one thanks.
For those who are fin nibblers, they would segregate them and put them in a little tank no larger by a foot!
It's disheartening to see fish kept that way.
It's even worst if you have been to fish farms.
Things that don't get shown to the public are the worst.
