White spots on colomesus puffers....pls help

Read this before posting!!
Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Would these puffers bother a gibbecep(sp)?
I am trying to work out in my head how I can get two large tanks into my living room. I have a 4ft space (where my 2.5ft tank is currently) which i have now ear marked and a 3.5ft space where the puffers are at the moment.
If i put puffers and plec in the 4ft tank and then my 2.5ft tank could go where the puffers currently are situated but this would only work if the plec would be ok with the puffers..... I dont think i'm going to be allowed 2 4ft tanks and i wanted one at least 4 ft for the plec, he is only 4 inches at the momet but yet again i was told he wouldnt grow bigger than this and apparently 24" is more the norm!!
I must sound like the most stupidest person in the world right about now!!!!

Can you buy or build a stand where the smaller tank fits under the larger one?

Are you sure that your plec will get to 24 inches? Are your sure you have him IDed properly? Got any pics?

I cant get any pics cos he always hides in my boat but he is a Gibbecep, black with like khaki markings on and a big sail like fin on his back. It was Pets at home that said he would only get to 4 inches, 5 max but loads who have seen him say 2 ft is more likely.purplecandle wrote:Are you sure that your plec will get to 24 inches? In fact, i was given my big tank by someone who couldnt care for their fish any more and there was one in there the same as mine and it was at least 14" big. I re-homed him at a LFS along with two gouramis and a pregnant swordtail.....the tank didnt even have a heater when i got it, so how those fish survived all those years i'll never know, plus there was a huge goldfish in there too!!
Would he not be ok in a 4ft tank with 3 puffers then?
I doubt i would be allowed that kinda set up with two tanks on top of each other, he;s very house proud and only wants a wooden stand..........

I live in the MIdlands, 20 miles north of birmingham. Is a 4ft tank small then? to me it seems a big tank......

If you could bring those other fish to the LFS, why not this pleco? I think a nice wooden, home-made stand for 2 tanks, would be lovely.

I bought this pleco, the others were given to me by someone else and were way way too big for the tank, the pleco couldnt even turn in the tank without coming out of the water......
When i bought mine i was told he would never get bigger than 5 inches so i went ahead and bought it, trusting the advice of the LFS...I found out after that this wasnt the case so in my mind, I bought the fish, I have to house the fish, so my plan was to have a 5ft tank for him but now that i have to have one that size for the puffers i cant have two that big so that is why i wanted to house them together if possible......
TBH, the puffers are looking extremly poorly tonight, they are not even moving out of the suckers way when he's cleaning the bottom, none of them are really swmming about and the white spots look like they are multiplying, the one certainly has more now that yesterday, the two others are hiding behind the plants so cant get a cleaar look at them...
It has been snowing here constantly today and I have been unable to get out the house to go buy a 4ft tank
tomorrow looks set to do the same too...ohh what a nightmare, i'm so damn depressed about the whole thing now..........-

Are you doing EVERYTHING stated in the treatment article? That includes 80% water changes, while thoroughly cleaning the substrate every other day? Even every day would be better.

Yes I have been, two are swimming around now but they are flashing on the plants and decs.....they have had these spots since friday afternoon now and look very sorry for themselves......
