I'm really proud of you even considering this. I know how hard it must be. I think you'll be really happy though, if you can get 3 dwarf puffers in their place. Look how cute they are:

If you do decide to get DPs, be sure to read up on them 1st:

Are those the only other ones I can have?

They only grow to 1", so 3 would be perfect for a 10g & they'll be the easiest puffers for you to find. You could even order them online but you'd be best with 3 females, as males will fight.

There are different kinds of fish that aren't puffers that would be suitable.

DPs are cute though and they have a lot of personality and attitude. When we first got our irrubescos I thought that they were kind of ugly. Upon spending more time with them and getting to know them I now find them to be beautiful. I can now appreciate the beauty that they have to offer. Instead of it being bold colours it's gentle red patterns, complicated mottling patterns, and the lace-like appearance of the females' tails.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Considering she has no transportation, i was trying to offer something she might find in a LFS or easily shipped to her. Most folks find them adorable & great fun to watch.

I wasn't suggesting that she get irrubescos but that we can find beauty in unexpected places once we give them a chance :) She may find DPs unattractive right now but once she got to see and be around them for real she may find out that she really does like them after all :)

DPs are wonderful little fish but if you really don't want them then you could go with one or two bettas (divide the tank) in your 10gal. Both pack a lot of attitude and will be happy in your tank.

I was watching this at the other forum and I haven't read all the post here, but...

Can you get some kind of "medical" exception to the 10g limit in your dorm? Or can you have multiple 10g setups? 10g are dirt cheap on craiglist and you could keep singletons in their own tanks.

Just a thought and these may have been suggested aready.
There are many knowledgeable fish keepers on this forum willing to help and give great advice...The advice is free; What you choose to do with it gives it value.

That's a thought... 3 10g + 5g tanks in a small dorm room is a lot though. And they'd only last until the end of the school year in them. They'd have to be upgraded to at least a 60g by then.

One of my favorite Dwarf puffer video's. A bunch of males guarding a females. Lots of spunk and attitude. Males have the stripe down the tail, and the female is fatter with more spots and keeps staying inside the little decoration.
