Are superworms & mealworms ok for GSP?

Post by midnightsunPuffer »

Hello, I am new to puffers but have always wanted one ever since I was a young kid. So now I have a green spotted puffer in a 30 gal tank (w/instant ocean) in my room and will eventually get some dwarf puffers. But here's my question, is it ok to feed my GSP a mealworm or superworm once in awhile? I have a bearded dragon so I always have these worms on hand and have already fed one to my GSP without thinking about it (I saw someone do the same on youtube). My gsp is doing great but I just want to know if it is a good idea to do it again or not. I heard the outer skin of the worm is hard for the puffer to digest, is this true and is it dangerous for them to eat these worms? Any info on this matter or on these awesome fish would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks for your time

As a very rare treat. Even for a beardie, the outer skin (chiton) is difficult to digest. Even more so for the puffer. Very fatty too.

Thanks for the quick reply Pufferpunk,
So do you think it's best not to feed him/her these worms at all? In the long run can it harm my puffer, or is it safe to feed on rare occasions? My puffer sure loved it when I gave him/her it, but I want my puffer to be healthy.

I'd say 1/week wouldn't hurt

I feed him mainly blood worms and ramshorn snails. But I also have ghost shrimp in his tank, not sure if he's eaten any yet.
I also want to get him people shrimp but one bag is $16 o.o
