Perfectly sh**ty end to the week...after work yesterday I took the dogs to the park and did groceries and didn't get home until around 8. My 19 year old kitty for whom we've been doing palliative care (cancer) was in severe respiratory distress. We took him in and had him euthanized :-(
At that point, I really didn't ask or care what it would cost, I just wanted it done, and fast, he was obviously suffering. And I have to say that the folks at the clinic were great, they rushed us in and were very kind and quick and everything, but I nearly dropped when I got the bill. $518. Seriously??? I know it costs more when you want the ashes back (we do) but holy crap... They're not even technically an emergency clinic, just an after-hours one and no treatment was done, just the euthanasia...
Oh, well, if crap comes in 3's we have to be done for a while...

Aww! Sorry to hear about him Carmen. 19 years is a long time. ):

That price does seem a bit high for such a (physically) simple treatment.

cremation in Ontario is not a common request.

It has a premium.

Otherwise, you could have had them give him a shot and he'd go to science for $45

Wow... I totally didn't catch on to the cremation part (even with you saying ashes... wow). I guess that would be the reason then. I don't even think we have a crematorium for pets here.

@PP: Us kids are naughty these days. Can't help it --Though maybe I should have considered that this was a PG forum. Sorry.
Actually, I found it racist.

I thought it was a pic of Kimbo Slice .. with the text overlay. BUT aside from the racism (which I didn't think it was), check the stats on rape victims... At your age.. in your school, you probably already know 4 or 5 and don't even know it.

That's why I didn't find it funny. Too serious of an issue to joke about. THEN, add the image, it implied that "that is what they do". Which is not the case (partly); the fact that he is male (from the image, we'll never really know), is the only accurate portrayal of that entire stereotype.

Not being overly sensitive... just stating the facts.

There is actually a wonderful "funeral home" and crematorium for pets in Guelph, called Gateway. We always get our guys privately done and get the ashes back. I just can't deal with my fur-kids' remains being disposed of as waste :-(
In our area, cremation is very much the norm, although the private (as opposed to mass) option may be less common. I guess it depends on where you are...on a smallish lot in city, where most folks don't plan on staying forever, burial just isn't that desirable :-/
LOL, you can't even step foot in a clinic in Burlington for $45. Even without the special cremation, it would have been well over $200. I don't know if the after-hours rates are higher and that's why it was so much, but they aren't noted as such on the bill. A lot of people do head out of the city for cheaper regular vet rates but on a Friday night, this clinic and the emergency clinic were our only options. Our local emergency clinic is a horrid place...

when our cat got sick in the middle of the night, we had to make an emergency call. That cost us over $300 because of an after hours premium. Have no idea what it would have been normally.

I didn't really play into the stereotype there on purpose, nor did I intend to imply racism. I just thought his facial expression was funny, and the words did kind of fit the situation with OYK.

I actually found the image on NR; from a topic similar to this except to do with classifieds. I didn't intentionally search for it.

Ouch! MRIs are fine. Extra fine when you get a sedative/anti-anxiety medication  I'm claustrophobic. It's really neat to be able to see your insides in such fine detail.

It hasn't happened yet but today is my Nana and Grandad's 65th wedding anniversary. I'm so proud and happy to be able to attend. They still love each other too!
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.
