Dogface puffer

I'm wondering about the dog face puffer. My question is that they say a dogface should be kept in no small then 100 gallon tank. Is this because he needs more space to swim or is it that they are worried by the amount of waist he will produce won't be good in such a small tank? With that being said what if you would put him in a smaller tank that is hooked up to others and there is a total of more then 100 gallons would he be fine? I'm not talking a 9" puffer in a 30 callow I'm thinking max 3 " and he would be moved as he got bigger. Also would a dogface and green spotted puffers be ok together. Yes the green spotted are at full marine and are smaller between 2-3"? Thank you!

I has a similar Q about a porky ... apparently the answer is both.

they are very active swimmers, sloppy eaters and produce a lot of waste.

So would a 30 gallon it's actually 32 but its 36" long would it be ok for a small one for a little while and would it be ok with some green spotted puffers?

why not just hold off until you can get the actual home tank?

That is the easier way to go. no pressure, no worries about mixing puffer species that probably won't work...

The GSPs are much more aggressive than a dogface. They'd rip it to shreds.

any puff that gets 10+ inches i would never house in a 30, even short term, unless its a quarantine tank for a week or two. you run a high risk of stunting him, and god forbid something happens especially in this economy where you cant upgrade him when you expected to be able to. the space recommended is a combination of both size and bioload produced by them. its the same thresh-holds for all puffs just the sizes that make the difference. a porc max size is 19 inches(round about) but if you put him in a 90 or 100 long term your still only giving him 18 1/2 inches to turn around(width of the tank) which would be uncomfortable for him and isnt something water volume can make up for and thats where the 120(4x2x2) comes into play and thats even still a little tight. now a dogface is a minimum of 100 gallons might be ok in a 90 since its still the same width as a 90, but then you have the waste factor so maybe if you incorporate as large of a sump as you can you might be able to have a dog face in a 90. just a thought and im sure people have other opinions
