You should watch his show, River Monsters, it will make you afraid of getting in the water

That's a neat show. We have some tigerfish skulls in my ichthyology class. Those teeth are quite impressive in person too
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

I'd swim with snakeheads, tigerfish or whatever you like...

Why?

Do you know the European pike - 'Essox lucius'?

I've dived with those (fw pike) on several occasions in lakes here in the UK (not your Canadian Muskie, though) and it seems as though they don't quite know what a bubble spewing monster is - they seem to be unsure but curious. You can get quite close. Sort of a couple of feet, nearly nose to nose.

Dolphins certainly hate open circuit scuba, Barracuda, too - they ignored me. I've never seen a shark while diving (are there any left?).

It's only the conditions, box jellyfish and myself I'm scared of.

Other people are welcome to my reg or mask, that's ok

Probably the pong from my suit that's acting as a shark repellant 8)

No tranq trim - easy. It was dead when the photo was taken, apparently.

i doubt it was dead, if you have seen the show that guy is one of the best at fishing and is very careful not to harm the animal in the catch and release

I saw a report in the UK's 'Daily Mail' that said he tried to revive for release but with no luck. Apparently, it was later given to villagers for food.

Maybe that's the sort of fish that would literally fight it's heart out...? Wonder if Marlin are the same? Anyone tried that here? Has anyone even seen one?

I am aware the angler you mention is as careful as you can be with a capture. Point noted, thanks. You are correct. I'm not against angling and would go sea fishing again.

The down side to sea fishing is that the animals really do die on the way up if you are in sixty fathoms or so (350ft, very roughly). I suspect that fish can be returned to rivers or lakes or shallow seas almost all of the time.

I know that 99.5% of anglers try to return catches.

As for sea fishing I like the boat ride but would prefer to catch last years thrown out Christmas tree. Did, once in Penzance harbour ;-)

Or just do a drift dive in really deep water and see the sun beams slanting through the water.

:D

A while back a random bloke wandered over to me next to a pair of sink hole type natural ponds and showed me the live carp he had in a plastic grocery carrier bag. He'd caught it in the neighbouring pool to the one I was diving in... My response was: 'very nice', shall we put it back now...?!!!

I'm guilty too. Twenty five years ago, I used to catch and kill blue sharks (at age 15)...

thats a shame if that fish did die. i would think that they would mention that in the linked article though. either way that is one hell of a fish. i feel guilty too when i keep fish when fishing or if a hook gets swallowed, which doesnt happen very often as i am a good angler and try not to let the fish swallow it. but really, if you put it back whats to say the next person coming along wont take it out? really cant let yourself feel guilty about it, especially if its for a purpose like food. if its with no intention like that then yeah its not humane, but if its for survival its nature

Sorry, I edited when you were writing.

I do like angling when given the chance. These days it's not about 'how heavy is that'?

Sort of 'where am I going to keep it' ?!

!!!

nah not for me. i enjoy catching everything, as long as its what im targeting while fishing that day. sunnies, bass, trout, carp, catfish, crappy, perch. its all fun. when i go fishing its all about "how heavy is that" and then "how many is that", never "where am i going to keep this one". i want the big fish, a picture and a nice release so that the next person can have a chance at catching that same fish later in life and hopefully release him for the next person. i have no reason to keep fish, except my fish tank :) and no river/creek/marine animal wild caught by me will ever go into a fish tank of mine. its not fair. at least with the fish we keep they were taken by someone else and were brought into the trade, not me personally taking him out and being responsible for that fish's almost certain death if put in the wrong hands. my cousin has two really nice and big trout stuffed and mounted, i dont know that i could do that unless i caught the big guy and something went wrong and he didnt survive. they can make replicas if you know the length and weight of the fish and thats the route i think i would go

That's pretty cool but not my thing. Very nice you like to release for another day... :)

My father-in law is a bit of a different story. If the sea trout or salmon is large enough, it gets eaten. I hate to say it but I do eat those fish...

As for the tiny native stuff I have - they have been in my garage tanks for a couple of years and are growing slightly better than the animals you find on the beach. How do I know that? I visit that particular beach from time to time and could tell you the rock pool they came from.

Moot point, that one. I have kept, observed and released native marine pipefish before...

I have a sodding great pond but it's full of koi and goldies.

Maybe I could give a tench a good home (Tinca tinca) I like the name... :)
