Guppy with a strange face...

Post by Ohyouknow »

I can't get a photo of it, but I just realized that one of the guppies my daughter picked out has quite a strange face. I can't seem to get him to hold still long enough for a photo. I guess I never really looked at them before, but it seems like this one had it's face burned or something... It's almost like it's mouth is melted open in a scream. To eat, it bumps into flakes, and tries to hoover them in - but it's like it's mouth is so open it can't get enough suction to really suck it in. Do you think it was from injury? or probably like this when I bought it? I'll keep trying to get photos, I feel so bad for it. It looks like it would hurt... It's a female, and I thought she was pregnant when we got her - but I'm not so sure anymore? She hasn't gotten bigger (two weeks)...

According to RTR, fish like guppies that are overbred or inbred (I guess there can be fish incest)

Are typically so over bred that they are prone to deformity and decease.

RTR gave a nice speech about the subject, I cannot find it!

But it was a good one, and I will never buy fish like guppies again..

If it is struggling, you may need to euthanize :(

Here is something he has said about it..

"Commercial livebearers, especially from the mass marketers, have been tragically overbred for many years and pitifully weak with paired recessive genes which serve nicely as time bombs in most hobby tanks." RTR

Thanks :) I was surprised to not have noticed before - but unfortunately, just as the other pregnant female did - it died when it's belly got really huge. :( I won't buy guppies again, either!
