Help with Puffer ID Please

Post by pufferpuggirl »

I seen a couple of puffers today at a LFS and was told they were Abei puffers. I am not certain due to having bought puffers that were labeled wrongly in the past.
I didn't think to take my regular camera, so these pics aren't a very good quality as were taken by the mobile phone. I hope they are good enough to make an identification.
The bigger of the two looked in fairly good condition, although both had tatty tails. The smaller I felt a bit sorry for because he seemed very unhappy to be in the same tank as the other, bigger Abei. They just came in last night and it seemed that he'd not settled yet either. It will be interesting to see if he's still alive this weekend, as we are going back to borrow a book the manager is loaning me.

Anyway, without delay, here's the puffers in question -- this is the smaller of the two.

This is the bigger one.

In these pictures they look more like Abei colours, but in person they were lighter, almost greenish, but definitely reddish spots. I thought they looked a bit longer in the body than the Abei's I've had, but it's hard to tell sometimes at the LFS because the puffer is stressed, so it's not it's normal colours. I think they are probably Abei, but I wanted to be sure, if that's possible from the poor quality of those photos. :?

They aren't the best photos either, so that doesn't help much.

Thanks though Amy. :D

I tried to play with the images in photobucket, but could not really get them to be any clearer :(

Just IMO!

I think the snouts are longer than that of turdigus....

If you just look at the snouts and compare them shape and length wise to pictures of abeis..they look very similar to me...

hopefully somebody with more experience can give you a better ID!

I can't see what the puffer in the first pic is, but the second one looks like an abei.

The 2nd does look like an Abei. But not for you, right?

I thought you said you weren't getting any more...
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Hard to tell from the pictures. I support the M. abei ID of the second one if it has red spots. I can't see any detail on the first one, though.

Just to clarify -- I am trying to ID these puffers for my friend, who works at the LFS because he isn't the best with puffers. Nowhere did I say I was getting one of these puffers. Goodness people, give me a break. :(
