Do Ramshorn Snails Eat Their Own Eggs?

Post by bigfatfish »

Mine lay so many eggs its untrue! But... they keep disappearing? I assume that the adults must be eating them? Why is that & what can I do to stop it?
They are in a heated, filtered tank with no other animals. I feed them on fresh veg (carrot/brocolli/cucumber etc) & also sinking algae wafers & Reptomin sticks (which are high in calcium).

Yes they do. I've seen it up close.

I think mine do it because there are too many dime sized adults in the tank, about 25. They are in a 10g that is well fed with a huge variety of foods, it is filtered over 10x/hour, and I do 60-70% WCs about every 4 days. I had the temp up around 79-80 and I just lowered it a few degrees and some of the egg sacks have been left alone on the glass since then. IDK if that had anything to do with it or not.

Mine always did that! I quit trying to breed them for that reason because they would always end up eating them.

I'm having the same problem. Since I have a GSP now I'll be able to thin them down. I plan only keeping around 10 or so of the larger ones.

They seemed to have multiplied faster when they were in a community tank. Maybe the gravel substrate made the difference. Easier for the little ones to hide.
