The Bio-Spira formula is now only made for marine tanks. The FW version is called: Dr Tim's One & Only: http://www.drtimsaquatics.com/
There is a new product called Safestart, made by Tetra. I'm not 100% sure about it's effectiveness. I know of nothing else that will work.

The guy I'm getting the tank from is giving me all his old supplies as well, including a filter. After I fill the tank up and get it going how long should I wait to put the puffers in it?

I would add them as soon as it is up and running. It will be easier to keep the bigger tanks ammonia and nitrite diluted and under control through water changes. This tank you are getting, is it up and running now? Or, do you know this guy well and if so does he have a running filter he can loan you or can he give you some used media (old sponge or cartridge) from one of his running filters?kms547 wrote:The guy I'm getting the tank from is giving me all his old supplies as well, including a filter. The tank isn't up yet, I'm picking it up later today. I'm not sure if he's giving me a running filter I'll ask him once I get the tank. Also aren't you suppose to let the tank cycle for a couple of days before adding any fish?

Sorry, I was thinking they were still in the small plastic tank and that you just bought them.
I know you don't have it up and running yet but I was wondering if he has it up and running and was going to take it down to give to you.
How long has your current 20g been up and running and what filter is on it.

No you were right, they are still in the small plastic tank. He doesn't have the 20 gallon up and running though. I going to pick it up today and set it up myself. I know there is this instant cycle mix I can get at the pet store, I might get that 'cause the sooner I can get the puffers in their new tank the better!

Only use Dr Tim's, nothing else will work! Add it directly to your filter & then add the fish. You are eventually going to have to upgrade--the sooner the better.

Thank you everyone for the information! My puffers are now in their new tank and they love it! It will be very soon when I change the FW to BW.

Re: I don't know what to do. GSP fish.
I was pretty much in the same boat as you about 6 months ago when my wife brought Yoshi and Luigi (yes our 3yr old named them), and I've since spent oodles of money getting them setup in a 55gallon tank. They are now very happy, however Yoshi seems to bully Luigi when it comes to feeding so I'm considering separating them during feeding time. I also immediately cycled them into a very light brackish water shortly after we got them and they are now just shy of full marine in a perfectly balanced tank. I do 50% water changes every few weeks and have VERY slowly increased the SG, where it is now stable at 1.020, i will be upping it again next week to 1.022 and then about a month later to 1.024, where it will stay.
Have fun and READ READ READ! There is always something to learn about these guys and honestly I've not wanted any tank mates for these two, maybe some live rock and fiddler crabs or snails for bait but that's about it, these guys love their solitude!
Enjoy and congrats
