Dog advice Needed!!!!

does anyone know how to make a dog stop jumping up on things like kitchen counters, jumping into rabbit cages, on people?

I have a German Sheppard mix dog. Not the medium sized German Sheppard you see with the bent legs, a real German Shepard whose mother spoke/understood Romanian. Do not know what the father was, but it was something goofy..maybe lab

A gigantic dog under a year old and when standing on hind legs is as tall as my 6 foot husband, the kids ride on him like a horse.

My problem is he is still in puppy stage. I normally keep him outside and bring him in when it rains/gets cold...and I am happy to put him back outside as soon as it stops raining...because he jumps up onto everything..

I have a huge rabbit / guinea pig cage that sits up on a dinning room table and does not have a top on it...my dog will jump up into the cage and sits in it with the rabbit and guinea pigs freaking out. He does not hurt them, he just wants to sit in there like a big goof ball. The rabbit and guineas do not appreciate this. He also likes to sit on the kitchen counters and the stove.

I have tried everything, I just can't wait out this puppy stage!

Not that I would hit him hard enough to hurt him, but if I do tap him...he does not feel it.

If I stay consistent and constantly fuss at him for the jumping..it is me who ends up worn out...

hes very like the a pup ive just rehomed
maybe try a leash when bringing him into the house until he calms down?
hard habit to break cos hes a goofy teenager and soo big and bouncy!

How much exercise does he get? How much human interaction in a controlled environment? Working dogs need jobs.

I'd let him in more and simply be firm and patient. Discipline (could be a firm word, a nasty glare, spray water, etc) when he's bad and tons of praise when he's good. There won't be a quick fix, it'll take time and effort and it'll just become harder and harder as time goes on and he gets away with it. Also, you'll want to stay on top of things. Don't catch him when he jumps up, catch him before he jumps up.

best advice pretty much right there. catch him before he jumps and scold him for it, and when he doesnt hop up there praise him. one of the most interesting things i learned in pshychology class was "controlled stimulus/controlled response". which the direct example in class was dog training. more specifically a bell. dog does something good and hears the bell and gets a treat. do that enough the dog relates the bell with a treat and over time just being good gets related with treats once you start cutting out the bell. training a dog that has habits already is very hard to do. we had a pit that we took in from my roommates old co-worker. dog was allowed the world at previous owners house. sitting on the sofa, allowed to play with anything and never disciplined, but regularly hit when he did something stupid/wrong(but really he was never taught any different) worst thing with it was people food though. he was allowed to sit at the table while people gave him little scraps, etc. after months and i mean like two to three months of telling him no, designating a spot for him to sit while we ate dinner, all while training him to not sit at the table. he was a very stubborn dog that would go sit down when you told him but as soon as you wouldnt be looking(or so he thought) he was on the move to sneak next to the table. but eventually with scolding when near the table and praise when he stayed away until we were done eating, he was a non begging dog at dinner and had free roam of downstairs while we ate and he never came near the table once he knew

I could walk this dog for 20 miles and he would just look at me "thats all you got?"

He does stay outside mostly for that reason, I do not tie him up or anything like that. We live in the country so he is a guard dog outside. He stays in a dog pin that is pretty big. My husband attached it to the playhouse he built for the kids so they have plenty of space. And we take him out to clean the pin and feed him and let him run around every day. We are investing in a fenced in yard that is about an acre..so he will have even more space then.

He plays a lot with my husband and his wife...here is his wife, a chow chow mix


I know they got married at some point, because all she does is nag him to play.

I wish I could afford dog training for this problem! Thankfully other than the jumping he is a good, well behaved goober.

I agree with the above. Every command must have a word. I use "off" for anything I want Kalvin to get off of. The second he gets off, he gets a big treat & then I say, "good off". Always follow a positive response with positive reinforcement (physical & verbal). I'd get a secure cover on those piggys though!

The piggys never get out, I swear. The cage was designed specifically for them. The rabbit likes to jump around the cage, but he does not jump out of the cage. But, If I am going away for a long time I will put the rabbit in a traditional cage, just in case because he does have the ability to jump. The piggys do not jump.

I wasn't worried bout them getting out, I'm worried about the dog getting in.

Do you have a date for puppy obedience school yet?

if I did put a lid on it, he just jump on top of the lid and smash the cage..

I guess I will have to. The local Petco has classes and there is a guy down the street who does a more military style training..

Go with Petco or look into your park district.

I put old vacuum cleaners along all of the open edges of the cage..he hates the vacuums!

Kaisa was very bad with stealing from the kitchen bench when she was younger. In the end I started leaving tasty stuff there, left the kitchen and waited just around the corner. When she thought I was out of there, and tried to steal, I came back and stopped her. After a few times of this, she learned, and she has never stealed anything there ever since. But she's never stopped stealing from the coffee table tough (I've just had to stop leaving things there). She's just been too lucky with her stealing there too many times
