Fahaka puffer information... please

Post by fahaka55 »

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I am looking into purchasing a fahaka as well.If anyone could answer a few quick questions for me I would really appreciate it!

1. How much does it cost to feed a fahaka per week?
2. If i feed him frozen shrimp, how many should I give him?
3. If I stick my hand in the tank will he bite it?
4. What type of snails do fahakas enjoy?
5. Is freeze dried/frozen food ok? if so , what types have you been successful with?

THANK YOU!!! :D

1. How much does it cost to feed a fahaka per week?
It is really cheap. I bought a bag of frozen clams for 2.50 and its lasted me over a week. A jar of earth worms will last a 2 weeks. So its cheap and food lasts a while.
2. If i feed him frozen shrimp, how many should I give him?
I have to cut the shrimp into piece's cause a whole shrimp is to much.
3. If I stick my hand in the tank will he bite it?
He may try to, mine has bitten me once and tried a lot
4. What type of snails do fahakas enjoy?
most people start a small tank and breed pond snails and ramshorn snails. just dont give him MTS snails due to their hard shell
5. Is freeze dried/frozen food ok? if so , what types have you been successful with?
freeze dried isnt good, but frozen is. Any raw frozen hardshelled food is good

THANK YOU!!! :D

How do you breed ramshorn or pond snails? I am assuming this would save money....

get a small 1g-5g tank, cycle it. Toss in a few snails. and feed them every now and then

As far as tank set up.... Do people just use Sand on the bottom and no plants or decorations? What type of sand is good for them?

For the Fahaka tank,...they prefer a deeper sand bed...they like to burrow. I use pool filter sand. I have live plants....java fern, crypts, java moss, and anubias...placed near the base or on top of rocks, drfitwood, etc

A large footprint (48x24) will be necessary when it gets full grown.

I suggest u try a variety of foods,...but growing ur own is always best. I grow my own crayfish and snails.

i feed the equivalent of 1 lrge shrimp per week...mine is close to full grown. a few snails every day

Bigger snails are better...full grown ramshorns or Giant Colombian ramshorns,...avoid MTS

Not sure if your talking about the tank for snails or the fahaka, if fahaka JT gave great info.

If you meant the snail tank, i can be bare bottom with no dec. you dont need much for them

I was talking about the fahaka tank but thank you for that extra information regarding snails.

One last thing...

How long does it take the snails to breed?

Do they produce a bunch a once or what?

How many snails should I start with?

a couple of weeks before you see the babies sliding on the glass. They lay an egg sack that has a lot in it.

I always go to petsmart/petco and ask them for the pest snails. just be sure to say no mts snails. start out with as many as you can get. if you can afford to pay for them go to aquabid.com and order a couple 100

also you can get a bag of frozen peas for puffer food.

Well there are two types of snails that you could breed easily.

Ramshorns, if you provide optimum conditions within a week your tank would be covered with eggs sags and around three weeks those snails will hatch.

Or Pond snails, they breed a little slower, but still pretty fast.

Here is an article on snail breeding
library/feeding/basic-snail-breeding/

You really only need one to start with because they do not need male and female to breed, but to make things go faster 25-200 is a good amount to buy.

A Lot of people buy snails from aquabid.com..the colored snails are more expensive red, blue but the brownish one are much cheaper..

You can also try ebay
