I am not certain if he / she can knock the top off and make a second attempt, but it shouldn't be able to shatter the glass and get it in the tank

Worst case scenario (and thank you for making me think of this), is the glass breaks, the film holds it together, but gravity causes it to bow and fall in the tank. Those tests are on vertical panes of glass, not horizontal.

Now thinking of a center brace to hold it together.

Kitanas aside, I think this will work..the film I mean.

If the puffer hits it with enough force, perhaps it would break some. But I think that film would hold at least 85-90% of the broken glass..which is pretty good. And what does fall of would be minuscule. By the time that glass fell your puffer would have already buried itself in the far corner of the tank

It would take an odd series of events to have a piece of that glass hurt your puffer with that film on.

First he would have to hit it hard enough to break it a little...then instead of getting freaked out by what he just did and going to go hide..he would have to be that puffer that said, "bring it on, glass" to just let the glass rain on him...

And then he would really have to hate you (or be really smart like those dinosaurs in that movie Jurassic Park) if he gave it a second go in the same spot because he now sees a weakness in the glass....but I really doubt any puffer would hate his owner that much....he would probably try to hide the damage with a plant or something..or just pretend he had an invisible tankmate...

I think it is a good idea..

I don't have the luxury of plexiglass. I have about 50 panes of glass that I can reinforce and weigh down but that is it.

Just a thought, could a puffer actually get that much velocity to break glass with that film on?

I know they can get up enough speed to fly out of the tank, but that is about it...and they hit the floor, perhaps they make it to the couch..

Wouldn't the tank have to be really deep to allow enough vertical space to gain enough velocity to not just hit the glass but break it..

Wouldn't that be equivalent to not just landing on the couch, but hitting the kitchen sink in the next room?

I think it has more to to with the actual mass and it hitting it with enough force to knock it off. Even a glancing blow would knock it off in its present state. A direct blow would shatter it or cause it to bounce and break.

I though of the film because it is smooth and eggcrate would equal a sharp knife even with glass on top of it. Imagine sliding your face across some eggcrate ... ick!!

With the film on the bottom, I am assured that no glass will enter the tank. But I could always do it double sided
