Dang! Big boy sprung a leak!

Post by J-P »

The top half of my 500 is officially leaking. Not a HUGE leak but enough to be annoying.

I have the repair equipment ready but I have to shut it down for 48 hours.

Things I have on hand to spare:
2 x aquaclear 50s
1 x aquaclear 90
1 x large sponge filter.

I have a feeling that this is not enough to keep 1 koi, 1 comet, 2 fancy goldfish, a huge pleco and a small angel from having an ammonia bloom correct?

I could possibly re-home the angel and the pleco with the Tiger Barbs that are in QT at the moment...

any thoughts?

just some extra details... ambient tank temp (after putting the glass on last night) is a scorching 86.

I did a water change last night, I just shut off the heaters and I think I will do another before I power down the main pump.

I don't know why the heaters didn't click off when the temp rose so quickly.

I am not loosing too much ... it is the 48 hour wait time I am worried about.

Think of a 2.5 day power out. My smallest pumps and filters will hold up but it may not be enough. The benefit I have is that I can do a water change, with a power out I can not.

The other concern is the O2 levels in the tank. I would like to keep the lights on for the plants and the O2, but that will heat up the tank also and deplete it at this point.

Thus I am a little perplexed.

well I started the pumps back up ... so far no leaks.. and no fatalities.

I have a feeling the extreme heat over the last few days cause some seals to expand a bit and opened up a small (tiny) hole in the down drain from the top tank.

A big sigh of relief :)

Is the leak high enough to where you dont have to completely drain the tank?
