Fahaka tank-top Q

no, not the shirt.

I think I already know the answer to this question but I'll ask anyway.

Will a single pane of 5mm window glass be enough to keep a Fahaka from jumping the tank? I just put the glass there for comparison purposes. It will be held in place by heavy metal 1/4 round. I am just worried that he (or she) will shatter it.

Q. pt B: if I adhere eggcrate under the glass will that ensure that it does not shatter?

Ok, I have no idea..so i asked my husband..a fairly handy guy

First I had to explain what a fahaka was

Next I had to explain the force that a fahaka can hit the glass with

Then I explained the teeth

and then I explain how big a fahaka gets

In my husbands opinion you need thicker than 5mm, he suggested Plexiglas..

Then he said, that if you are going to encase or reinforce around the glass..you might have a better chance if you glued two 5 mm sheets of glass together..

Just trying to help!

I was hoping the eggcrate would buffer the shock and provide a visible inhibitor. The fish will not hit it straight up but on an angle. The eggcrate should chip first, if at all.

Well I have never seen me small Fahaka jump. But What ever you got there should be Fine. Or you can place some weight on the top of the glass

this guy is 9" now. I don't really want to add weight to the TOP of the glass... I think it is better some how reinforce the bottom so broken glass doesn't fall into the thank.

That transparent film to make glass shatter proof!!! I could line the glass in that and not worry about broken glass in the tank!!!

Well I've got sliding glass pieces on my Fahaka tank, and I have never worried about him hitting them. He has jumped out of the tank, but only when I've left the lid open enough for him to get out. I've never had him jump up and hit the glass before. I can't imagine that my glass pieces are more than 6-7mm, if that.

I had Fahakas come out through standard glass tops. I changed to eggcrate with thicker glass over it, but it does not retain splashes. Most plastics will sag/warp unless very thick ($$$).

Shatterproof glass isn't. Have you ever seen a broken windshield or sliding glass door panel? We have full-height fixed windows which are shatterproof. One "went" in the first year - there were tiny glass slivers all over the room up to 15+ feet away from the window. We had to call in a company that does after-fire or house break-in cleanup to go over all the furniture. rugs ,and floors. Shatterproof glass does not break into big, dangerous knives which a major danger if they fall, but those thousands of tiny slivers would be in fact more dangerous in tanks.

I've never owned a puffer other than my GSP but I agree with purplecandle's hubby, plexiglass would prob. be a good option. BUT...I also agree with RTR, a piece thick enough to be effective would be costly. I worked at a sign shop for many years and we typically had fall-off (scrap pieces) of plexi in abundance. I've used it for just about everything you could imagine. If you have a shop nearby maybe you could inquire about buying some of their scraps.

That is what I was thinking of. It is a film that goes over the glass pane. Line the bottom so and fragments that do escape would not fall into the water
