Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. My puffer list is 1 Auriglobus nefastus puffer, which the following questions are concerning.

I bought it at 'That Pet Place/That Fish Place' in Lancaster, PA. They were marked as nefastus, so I'm assuming that's what it is.

It's currently in a 36g bowfront, and it's got several black skirt tetras and neons in there temporarily. I understand it's a killer, but they're gone this week, and it's too small to bug them very much just yet.

First of all, how do you feed it correctly, I was told to feed it frozen mysis shrimp, that's what they feed them there. I mix these guys with frozen bloodworms to make it more protein-y and healthy. I defrost them, wash them, and then put them in the tank via turkey baster. It doesn't even look at them, meanwhile, the tetras eat them up. Do they just take a while to eat? The tetras are outta there soon, so I figured I'd wait for them to really judge anything. I also have a couple pond snails and ramshorn snails in there as food. I don't think it has touched them.

Also, just to confirm, this fish is full freshwater, correct? I've read that it is, but I wanted to confirm.

Third, what will these do to plants. I keep planted tanks, but this is rather bare and ugly, with a few decoratinos here and there, but not the thing I like. If they aren't compatible with plants, I'll probably take this as my chance to have a giant 'fish bowl' with a castle in the middle *YES!*. I have pea gravel in there now, but is PlaySand a better substrate?

Welcome to the forum! If you go to the learn tab you can check out the PufferPedia, look up information and pics of your puff. I would link you the information directly but the device I am on won't allow that ATM. I am sure too that others will chime in soon enough!

Thanks, but unfortunately, there is no profile for A. nefastus, just modestus and silas, which are peaceful, smaller, 'cousins' of my puffer.

I've come to find the following information, based off of other forum discussions and some vague descriptions online.

Common Name:Greenbottle Puffer

Other Common Names:Bottle Puffer

Family: Tetraodontidae

Distribution: S.E. Asia - Indonesia, Lakes and Rivers

Water Parameters: Temp: 23 - 26C (74 - 80F); pH:6.0 - 7.8

Personality/Temperament: Agressive; Hunts and searches for food.

Max. Size: 4-6 inches

Estimated Lifespan: Estimated 10+ years

Sexual Dimorphism: Unknown. Cannot tell genders apart by eye.

Diet: Live and frozen foods (not fish), snails, freeze-dried krill, frozen shrimp, bloodworms- live or frozen, ghost shrimp (gut-loaded), and other molluscs and crustaceans. These puffers must be fed a daily diet of snails to prevent beak overgrowth.

Care: Pufferfish are extremly sensitive to nitrites and ammonia and should only be introduced into a fully cycled aquarium. Due to their messy eating habits, overfiltration is recommended.

Breeding: We have not found any record of this Auriglobus nefastus having bred in captivity. Maybe yours will be the first?

Minimum Tank Size: 35 US Gallons (130 Liters)

lol well, I use google chrome - best feature on it is that I can type ' pufferforum.net Auriglobus Nefastus ' and it'll bring that page right up. IDK if other browsers support that type of searching, or if you can simply do that from google.com...

I have never seen a nefastus sold in the US. I would go ahead & assume it's one of the other 2 smaller species.

Those Auriglobus species are all very hard to tell apart. They are separate species, but superficially almost look the same, one reason why it was recognized quite late that these are more than one species. The biologists that investigated this group had to use characters hard to determine from a picture, making it difficult to ID them in an internet forum. Would really need sharp and detailled pictures of the head and probably the belly as well as the fin ray counts to be sure...

Hi nefastus

I believe I also have an A. nefastus puffer, or Greenbottle puffer. I identified my puffer according to information given by the Aqualog book, which in the back has specific characteristics of the puffer that can determine one species from another. We went through and tried to match up those identifying markers, and came up with nefastus. I will try to post a pic of mine.

If yours truly is a nefastus (and mine too), they aren't as aggressive as the information I've come across. In fact, I have mine in with my Bornean redeye puffer and they get on fine. In fact, the nefastus is a bit shy and certainly appears much different to the nippy puffer I seen at the LFS, and I suspect they are only nippy when stuffed into a too-small over-crowded aquarium with little to no decor.
