Tankmates for my figure 8?
Hello. My figure 8 puff has been in a established 10G for a little under a year now. I have just gotten him a 55G*No heater filters hood water or anything in it yet* Once this tank is established. What can I put in with him? I read at wetwebmedia that they live longest when kept alone. And I obviously dont want to shorten his lifespan, then again a 3 inch fish alone in a 55G would seem kind of silly. Any ideas?

Just talked to my LFS. They said it wouldnt be a good idea to put him in there. He would "LOVE" all the space. But they said because he has been in a 10g for almost a year. Chances are theres no tankmates suitable

Re: Tankmates for my figure 8?
Are you saying your LFS has told you NOT to put your Figure-8 puffer in your 55-gallon tank all because he's been living in a 10-gallon for a year?
If so, that's silly. That would be similar to saying someone's lived in a small house for most of their life so they cannot move to a bigger house.
I'd put him in there anyway, and if you don't, you definitely need to get him out of that 10-gallon which is way too small for him. I think Bumblebee gobies might work with him, and I know others have had success keeping tankmates with their F8's.

No. They said that nothing else could live with him in a 55G because he has been alone in a 10g for a year already. Sorry for any misunderstanding on that. They said short-term tankmates would work. Long-term he would probably eat them. I was thinking DP's for the 55 and eventually finding the F8 a 20-29G for himself?

Oh sorry about that .... I thought that seemed a silly thing to say, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Wow, you could have quite a pack of dwarf puffers in a tank that big! But yeah, I think it would be a good idea to get that little F8 into a bigger tank because 10-gallons really is such a small tank for him to live in permanently.
If you're not against making that 55-gallon a brackish tank, you could have a Ceylon puffer in there. They are quite nice and get to a nice size, not too big and certainly not small.

Re: Tankmates for my figure 8?
If you go by the formula of 5 gallons for the first and 3 gallons for every dwarf after that .... that's about 25+ puffers, isn't it?

Actually it's seventeen Suzanne. Haha
25 x 3 = 75 - 3 + 5 = 77g for 25 DPs.
25 x 3 = 75 - 3 + 5 = 77g for 25 DPs.

Think your math is a little off LOL. 25+ would be they only need 2g each LOL

Re: Tankmates for my figure 8?
IMO, if you decorate the tank heavily,. with many broken lines of sight, & add the other BW fish in there before the puffer for a couple of week, it might be OK to add the puffer. Here's a good list of tanks mates: http://badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html

Okay, okay!! I got that my math was off. It was late and math isn't my strong point and I did ask it as a question if you noticed.
