Tank finally ready for pea puffers :)

Post by ballyhoo »

I have a 30 gal lightly planted, with more plants on the way and now I'm ready to get the fish :D
I was wondering how many pea ( Carinotetraodon Travancorcius ) could comfortably get along in a 30 gal tank.
Thanks!
here is the tank

the little fish that are in there are Danios which were used for the cycle and they will be rehomed before the puffers get in the tank

I agree.. but that tank doesn't look like a 30 looks more like a 10.. maybe just the way the photo was taken. What are the dimensions of the tank?

I am looking at the plant sizes vs how much space they are taking.. also that filter intake position.

I have 2x 30 gals right behind me and I looked at the spacing and mine look a lot bigger.

Yep the second photo is better :)

one of those "eh?" moments :)

My camera does that sometimes also ... especially when it is on full auto.

with 6~7 DPs you may get away with 2 males and 4 or 5 females. OR check the breeding section.

I don't know if the parents have to be separated or not. If not, 1 male and 3 or 4 females with space to grow the fry ;)

I'd be ordering them offline most likely or trying to place an order through my LFS.
But you recommend only going with one male?

from what I have read .. there are aggression issues.

library/puffers-in-focus/sexing-carinot ... rf-puffer/

library/puffers-in-focus/dwarfpuffercare/

are good reads if you haven't done so already

I have read those :) Very helpful.
I'm not looking to breed them, if it happens it happens but I am not hoping for it.
I had planned on doing a 1:3 male:female ratio and starting with that and perhaps adding more. Or, like a betta sorority, is it best to introduce them all at the same time to allow the formation of a pecking order so to speak?

all at once as juvenile is best.

Once you intro a stranger into an established tank there are usually conflicts :)

I know sexing them is difficult, is there anyway i'd be able to order a specific gender?

you can ask .. but what you get is different.

The only way to be certain is with a magnifying glass and looking at them in the bag. Other than that I have no idea. Well beyond my level. Especially juvies. Adults I can sex but babies, I have no experience. Maybe PPG another member can chime in?
