filter recommendation

Just picked up a approx 115G tank(51.25"x 21.75" 21.75") for Bloats perm home. Im tryin to figure out what the best filter would be for this tank. I already have a marineland 220 on the 55 he is in now that will be moving over, but what other filter would yall recommend I run. I dont want to do a wet/dry due to the chance of flooding since i live in an apartment.

I have had positive experience with my Rena Filstar canister filter. Its been hassle free, effective and it was even reasonably priced. Now in my experience at least most the time w/ aquariums when I try to cut costs it comes back to bite me in the arse later, but this purchase definitely hasn't. Mine has been running like a champ for a few years.

I personally dont think thats enough. While I do use aquaclears on all my tanks. You will want atleast*Pretty sure.... Correct me if im wrong* 10x/hour turnover. So for a approx. 115G you would want about 1150 GPH for the so called "recommendation" and 520 GPH would be for a 52G. I could be wrong. But this is just what I have read.

I'm an old Aqua Clear aficionado, too. Powerful and reliable. One issue: DO not try and substitute filter media, or do so with extreme care making sure the non-Aquaclear media is weighted down well. I've overflowed water onto the floor several times when attempting to use media bags with specialty media or even with filter floss. The water moves through the filter at such speed it literally floats the non-Aquaclear media to the top with force and will cause the water to flow over the top of the filter box. Lesson learned Now I only use Aquaclear fitted sponges and carbon.

Another thing learned about Aquaclears: match the filter size to the tank size or you will not get good results.

I have a Fluval 405 on my 30Xhigh puffer tank and love it. It really is overkill being rated for a 100g tank, but that's nice with these fish. I'm very impressed with it. I also recently switched over to a H.O.T Magnum filter (hang-on canister style) for my 20 gallon and so far, it's a super filter. It has an on-off switch which is great for feeding my slow-moving puffer. It really moves the water around well, and has an adjustable elbow on the water return so you can easily direct the flow to any part of the tank.

I really don't think that's nearly enough. I've been mostly disappointed in all the Marineland products I ever tried, unfortunately. Very weak, IMO. Is that Marineland 220 a canister or HOB model? A canister might be beefy enough to do the trick, if you use another filter along with it and keep the media cleaned so your turnover rate isn't cut down much over time.

I looks like the only canister with enough gph is the Fluval FX5. It does 925gph that with my 220 that does 220gph would be enough. And I love the quiet of a canister over the waterfall of a normal filter

Thats 1145 GPH. Just right for that size tank! gl.

I dont think canister really need to turn your water over 10x an hour. For HOB power filters i would definitaly use the 10Xhour method but with canisters you could probably get away with less.

HOB filters tend to have less media aswell as nonadjustable water output directions. With canisters you have more filter media aswell being able to direct the flow of water comeing out of them gives you the ability to keep alot of waist suspended long enough to be contained by the filter.

Im still a huge fan of AC filters but if i was to have a really long tank i would definitaly go with a mix of both HOB and canister.

its just a hair under 52 inch long.

So then a AC 110 and my marineland 220 canister would be good enough yall think? Plus it is going to be planted so I have that on my side
