Brackish Puffers from Eastern India A

Hello Friends,

I joined yesterday and I thank some friends for their warm welcome.

To start with what I think might be Chelonodon patoca, the specimen featured is 6 cm and collected from the Matla river at Jharkali, South 24 parganas District, West Bengal State, India.

Gorgeous fish!
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

I'd say Chelonodon laticeps. If you have a look at the original description of C. patoca by HAMILTON-BUCHANAN he never mentions those dark bands or has them in the drawing of C. patoca. I (and I guess Martin Hi. might agree) am sure if C. laticeps is a true species, many of the animals called C. patoca are truly this species. A lot of scientific work is waiting within the Chelonodon genus!
