My Pygmy Chameleon's Eggs Hatched Tonight

A couple of weeks ago I moved my pygmy chameleons from their small terrarium into a much bigger one, and as I was moving everything out, I found some eggs. I found 5 biggish ones and 2 smaller ones, and I took them and placed them in a container hoping they would hatch. I had no idea how old they were, so really didn't know when they would be hatching out.

I had the container upstairs on top of my Veiled chameleon's vivarium, and every day I would take a look at the container to see if there was any evidence of the eggs hatching.

Well, tonight was the night!!! I came out of the shower and I decided to have my look and I could see something inside. I opened the lid to find 2 baby pygmies out and about and one just emerging from the egg. That leaves 2 others still to come from the bigger batch. The other 2 smaller eggs have a longer time yet, as they are just still small.

So I've got 3 teeny tiny baby pygmy chameleons!!! I'm excited and feeling stressed at the same time. We will have to go and see about finding some food small enough for them tomorrow, as well as another enclosure for them. I just hope they survive, but I've sort of got myself prepared in case they don't.
Time will tell!

I will try to get some tomorrow, I think they literally just hatched tonight .. so don't want to stress them. They are VERY tiny.

And just to say.... these chameleons are not like other "lizards", they are very cool and nicer than your run of the mill lizard. I don't understand what people see in Bearded Dragons, as I think my little guys have tons more character and personality. My husband used to be a snake person and he's been really taken with the chameleons, and was over the moon about us having babies.

Very frustrating though. I got up this morning and called around trying to find pinhead size crickets, as that's what's recommended for the pygmy babies to eat. The one store that I called said they had some, so we went down there. I get there only to be told they have to be special ordered and it will be Monday before they come in. I've gotten 2 different people saying that the babies usually don't eat for 2-5 days, so hopefully they will be okay until Monday. We even stopped at another place that usually has fruitfly cultures, but they were out today. So I can't feed the babies even if I wanted to.

I did get them a small enclosure while I was out, that way I can remove them as they come out of the eggs. So I've got 2 that seem healthy and are moving around quite nicely. Two are still emerging from the egg and aren't moving much, so I don't know if they are dead or not. And that leaves 1 egg still unhatched, and 2 other eggs that need to mature a bit more before they will hatch.

I would guess that these little guys are about 3/4 of an inch in length, but oh so fragile. I felt badly just picking them up to move them to the enclosure. I hope they live, will be very exciting to see them grow and find out what sex they are.

I'm almost giddy... that sounds so stinkin cute. Hopefully the food issue works out for you - really stinks that all your options are well... not an option today!

Since moving the 2 into their new enclosure they've been moving around, which is a good thing. I was surprised to see them actually climbing up on a piece of wood that I put in there. In fact, when I decided to take some pictures, they were both on the piece of wood, right next to each other. Unfortunately I didn't put anything up to them so you could see their size in comparison with something else, and they look bigger than they are. They are also still dirty from coming out of the ground. I didn't want to hurt them, so I didn't try to get the dirt off them, I figure it will fall off soon enough by itself.

The other two, the ones still emerging from the shell, don't appear to be doing much. I don't know if that's normal, or if they have died. I don't want to stress them anymore than necessary, so I have left them in the egg hatchery container. I'm keeping them downstairs so I can monitor what's going on with them, and have them sitting atop one of my tanks where it stays nice and warm.

It's looking like I won't be able to find any food for them until Monday, but I am going to try something .... I've put a couple pieces of banana in a tallish plastic container, and I'm hoping that the banana will draw gnats to it or possibly fruit flies .... and then I can feed them to the babies. It's just a thought and if it doesn't work, I've only wasted part of a banana. I really hope they will be okay until Monday ... I would hate for them to die of hunger, that would suck.

Thanks .... the two in the photo seem fairly active and normal, for newborns ... but I don't think the other two are going to live, I'd be surprised if they do. I did sort of have myself prepared that some if not all, would not make it, so if any do, that's a bonus. I just wish I had been better prepared, but without knowing how old those eggs were, it was anyone's guess when they would hatch. I do think it's pretty cool though .... and the way my two females are looking, I suspect more eggs are on the way.
