White-Spotted and dog-face together, possible?

Post by 'H' »

Hi,
Can I put a White-Spotted and a dog-face together, all the books say you can, however, if there is the slightest chance they might fight then it will be just a one puffer tank.

If it would work what size tank would be best?

Sorry, not a good idea. Not just compatibility... You would need a 220g+ tank.

In the
pocket expert guide by Scott W.Michael
it says that the blackspotted puffer is
Rarely aggressive, and more than one can be kept in the same tank. Can also be kept with other Arothron spp, except more-aggressive forms.
:? I find this info verry misleading :?

I have seen videos of tanks with 2 or more puffers in them, just trying to find out if it worked out ok or was it a time bomb waithing to happen?

Well, most these people who are posting videos probably have young puffers. I would like to see their year later videos. If you are looking for long term success, two large puffers aren't recommended unless you have a huge tank. These fish get big and you really don't how they will act towards each other when they get older especially around feeding time. These fish can hit 15" each. My puffer i don't consider aggressive at all with other tank mates but when food enters the tank, he isn't sharing.

I have only heard of bad outcomes for both puffers with these combos.

I did not think you could keep to large puffers together, but when a so called expert writes in a book that more than one can be kept in the same tank. Can also be kept with other Arothron spp, you start to question all that you have lernt. How can people get away with writing stuff like this.

I went into a fish shop today who deal with a lot of puffers, and asked if you could put 2 dog-face puffers together?
They said as long as they were small and put into the tank at the same time, with a minimum tank size of 450 litres then everything would be ok!!!!

Will these people tell you anything to make a sale???

That tank would be large enough for a single DF.

That is their job after all ;)
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.
