I'm sorry I know this should be in the Meet 'n' Greet threat, but I'm too smug to banish him there, he needs more of a welcome

2 weeks ago I bought a Marine tank off ebay, & this little fella



I'm pretty experienced with freshwater ( & have a figure of 8 that I love to bits ) so I have taken lots and lots of advice about setting up my new tank and today I finally brought him home.

His beak is a little concerning, although it doesn't seem to bother him at all, so I will be feeding him slightly more bias of crunchy stuff than I have read, in an effort to trim it down slowly but immediately.

He's in a Betta 680 and the previous owner had him in this tank for 6 months, deciding it wasn't pretty enough compared to his reef tank. I can't see how he didn't want him, i sent him on holiday to the LFS whilst I let everything cycle, and they all fell in love with him

My LFS really are excellent (in Whitnash, nr Leamington) and really do give unbias advice. I've only just realised I've never seen what they are called, but I can't recommend them highly enough.

Fingers crossed, he'll be with me a very long time. He has two little yellow damsels (which shared his tank for the last 2wks in the LFS) to keep him company, haven't yet decided what else but for now I'm more than happy!

Wow, that little guy has some teeth! You need to do some dentistry on him. There's an article on that in our Puffer library (have a look under 'Learn* in the menu on top of the page).

With his teeth, I'm going to try and do it naturally at first and see how it goes.. it looks like he's only had soft foods when the previous owner had him for 6 months.

I've read all the articles about clipping them, and one about clove oil being a good sedative, & will look into it further if I can't shrink them slightly with cockles and the like.

For now, I'll just be sure to keep my hand out !

Hi Andy .... welcome to the forum! You've got a beautiful toothy boy there, lovely colour. If you do need to do any work on his teeth, please DON'T use clove oil -- there are other alternatives which are much safer, but we can cross that bridge when the time comes.

He's in a Betta Lifespace 680.. which is about 300 litres. There's not a huge amount of live rock yet, so he looks pretty comfortable. I actually intended to get that tank to move all of my freshwater fish into as it fits the hole, but this guy kinda hitchhiked along, very glad he did.

Originally if I went marine I wanted a Porky, but the woman in the shop kinda summed him up today, she said.. these guys have all got lots of character, but this little one is brilliant. They were really reluctant to let me have him back, they were really enjoying keeping him.

It's going to take a lot of discipline to not feed him every time I see him, he really tugs on the heart strings.

Those are quite some chompers on him! Look for MS222 or Finquel, you're gonna need it. Crunch foods are to prevent long teeth, not to grind them down.

Welcome to the forum, beautiful dog face you have there. A couple of questions how did you cycle this tank??? According to my calculations 300 Liters = 79 gallons. How big is he now, he is going to need an upgraded tank in the future. 100 US Gallons (380 liters) minimum by themselves for a Arothron nigropunctatus. Defiantly keep any eye on those teeth you will have to hand trim them. Good luck.

I should have said ... the tank was mature when i got it, he's been in it for 6 months.. so when i bought the tank he went off to a stable environment with some of his water (to compare) where he stayed until today, when my 8th water sample ( i think ) showed that it's cycled.

I'm in a property at the moment that's fairly small as I'm in a town centre, but Im renovating it to sell as we speak, so hopefully that will coincide with him needing a bigger tank.. i promise he won't want for anything

*all* of my friends have said... shouldn't you have finished the kitchen before you spent all that on more fish? Yep, probably

OMG, he is soooo handsome! In the video, his teeth almost look photoshopped, they are so white! LOL, you're thinking of calling him Fido? I always thought if I got a dogfaced one day, I'd call him Spot

I'd love to buy him something like a ball to keep him occupied, I need to find him something else to entertain him except eating...
