I have a nile puffer (Fahaka) and when i bought him he had 1 white ball on each one of his side fins. when i bought him he looked kinda sick and wasnt moving very much. they had him in a 10 gal and he was just unhappy.
i bought him, put him in a 55 gallon first for a month and hes doing great hes fatten up and great appitite but still has these white balls in each side of him on the side fin. i took pics of it and took it to one of the fish stores i go to who seem to know quite a bit about this and he said that they are parasites and they will fall off, well its been about 2 months and they are still there.
he swims around very happy now but im sure those are not comfortable for him, heres his stats,
i do water changes once a week religiously. im not just saying that
120 gal tank,
1 Fahaka puffer
1 bushy nose
1 blue eyed pleco
PH 7.4
Ammonia 0

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

i have not tried anything yet, i wanted to beef him up and make sure he was healthy otherwise. my local fish store said that they would probly fall off after a month or so but they are still there.
haha, yea the blue eyed is pretty cool, hes yellow with blue eyes, probably the craziest one ive seen.

it worked! if you look close you can see the dot, its not hairy, stringy or anything it looks just like a small cotton ball but i dont think its a fungus. he swims around totally happy and greets me every time i come around the tank.

I don't know about anyone else, but the photo is too small for me to see the white "dot". If it's been there for 2 months, it makes me think it's not a parasite at all. It could possibly be a "bruise"on the fin. Obviously I am just guessing here, and without being able to see the photo up close, I can only take a guess at this point.

I spoke with another puffer keeper and he said It possibly could be scars on his fins. Like I said he swims around like they are not there and is very happy but if they are parasites I wanna get them off him. They just look like white cotton balls on each one of his fins......

I agree, parasites don't look cottony. Possibly a fungus developed from an injury to the fin. Try Melafix & Pimafix. Be sure you have good flow/aeration when adding those meds.

That's kinda what I thought, they don't look like parasites, they have not gotten any bigger or moved or spread.....
So any certain kind you recommend?
I have 120 gallon with a rena x4 filter plus a marine land 120 gallon over the top filter.
He is very healthy and always eager to great me so now I feel good about treating him now, he was pretty sick when I first bought him.
