My new Puffer!!

Here is a Picture of my New Puffer, I am new to Puffers but not SW. This Puffer is about 3-4 inches in my FOWLR tank. I have always wanted a Puffer and it has taken me all these years to get one....lol
This Puffer is being housed in my 300g with 3 Volitans, Fuzzy Dwarf, Pinktail Trigger & a mated pair of Bird Wrasses.

beautiful puffer, i like that you have him in a large enough tank for the rest of his life.

do be careful with the puffer and the lions. i have had many issues with puffers getting stung for being too curious around lions. and many cases of the lions dying after the puffers decided the lions fins were way too irresistable as possible food items.

in your size tank with that particular puffer you should be ok, but the trigger may drive him crazy.

moniter these guys for a while and see whos the dominate one. you may have to pull the puffer beofre he gets too stressed and starts killing the lions or the trigger whomever is worse.

Thank You.... I have been watching for a dogface for the past year, hoping to find one that will fit in.

I will keep an eye on the puffer & lions, the main reason I went with this puffer is because it was already being kept with lions and no problems. I just hope my problems do not develop with maturity.

My trigger & puffer are actually swimming together, which I was glad to see, I have had the trigger for a few years now & it is very docile for a Pinktail... so I feel lucky with my trigger in that sense. It is about 6 inches now.

I am already in the planning stage of my new 600g, which all these fish will transfer to but that will not be up & running for 2 years.

I was going to put the Puffer in my 90g with my Tasseled Filefish but they can be somewhat aggressive with new additions so I went with my 300g.

good move, file fish and puffes can be very bad mixes. much worse than the triggers.

glad they will be ok.

rereading things you may need to remove the dwarf lion you have in there later though, a 12" dogface make view tha as the snack first .

Yea, he looks mean in the second one showing off his grill, but so inocent in the first pic.

Yea, I did not think a Puffer & File would mix well, the puffer was eating within the first hour of adding it, this is only my second day with the Puffer, they are cool fish.

you may need to remove the dwarf lion you have in there later though, a 12" dogface make view tha as the snack first .

Thanks, I am glad you mentioned this, I will watch for that, I can always move the dwarf to my 50g sump, that would give him enough room. I have had him for a couple of years, he is an adult male yellow dwarf.... That would be a terrible loss.

yeah even with volitans in there id rather see the dwarf in the sump now rather than have an oopsy. very hard to get the yellows in my area as well, i think unless your vols are its size or smaller go ahead and save yourself the oopsy. the dwarfs are not as defensive as the vols, and they need more tlc.

I will get my sump ready for him, he is a nasty little dwarf to my trigger...lol but I am so not sure with the puffer. So I think I will move him out.

My one Volitan is 12" and the other two are 7-8 inches, not including tails. Much bigger than the Puffer but not big enough to eat him. They are also grouping fish & stick together all the time, my trigger learned fast do not go into their territory.

sure np, just dont want your first puffer to be your last, they do require some added work as they can be like triggers, or be very mild. regardless i think youll love the guy, just be prepared to pull him if he starts harassing those vols. they will make him remember it well.

I had to do a house call a resort that has a Porc puff with a volitan, and the puffer used to eat all the lions food. That is untill the lion stung. the puffer barely recovered, so would really keep an eye on the puff. or even try seperating the two with something when you feed. that is when the problems usually occur.

LMAO Your not kidding!! .......

Yesterday I had Plan A going and it did not go smooth so today is Plan B..

I am dropping the small food on the left side of the tank, the puffer will eat from a feeder stick so I am going to feed it in the middle back of the tank. My lions only eat from the feeder stick on the far right side of the tank. That's today's plan...... LOL

Yesterday I put the small food on the left & went to feed the lions not realizing the puffer wants big chunks. here is how it played out.....LMAO

The Puffer took the Large lions chunk of shrimp the lion bit the puffer, the puffer turned & bit the lion back. In the mean time the trigger stole the chunk so the puffer bit the Trigger and the trigger turned to bite the Puffer back......
No marks on them, but that Lion was mad!!!

So you see why plan B is being tried today.....LOL

My lions have killed a very aggressive Kole Tang I had for 5 years by stinging it, that tang would not stop harassing them & one day it was stung, it took 30 minutes to die.

My pinktail was stung by the dwarf for trying to steal it's food, Ohh I thought I lost him, he took days just to swim again, I had to baby & nurse him along until he got through it.

They are not aggressive lions just Adult lions that will only tolerate so much.
