well an overflow should never happen..if you clean the prefilter.
worst case scenario would have been the about 10g of water woulda overflowed. The sump woulda emptied and ran dry but al the tanks water woulda stayed in the tank.

10g of salty water is quite enough to dump on the floor - but I suppose the advantages of using a sump vastly outweigh the disadvantages :)

I would have hated the idea of the pumps running dry in air and maybe overheating. Or heaters. If that is possible? If I know anything about sumps, I would suggest that they are mainly designed so that this is not probable?

Maybe someone that reads this can come up with something patentable: a thermostatic cut out that you can just slap on a device - there's $$ in this. There u go: disclosure :)

PPG - I've zapped myself on aquarium plugs more times than I care to remember  Not that often, but often enough... Yes, I know, I should be slightly more careful :)

Well, I look like either Einstein on a really bad hair day or 'Yahoo Serious' in the mornings anyway

I was wondering about prefilters - a puffed puffer inside an overflow.

Worst case and has probably never happened?

Just asking because I've had fish macerated by powerheads.

The thought of using a sump makes me nervous too. I have plans for setting up a SW tank with a sump, but I really don't know how I will dare to leave it alone when I am going on vacation. :scared: I guess I will feel better about it when I actually have put the whole thing up, so I know how it really works.

I have a hang-on filter and have found bits of guppy in there from where they've been sucked up and come in contact with the impeller. I find tiny guppy fry in there almost every time I go to clean it, but they aren't chopped up, still alive and kicking and I just add them back into the tank.

It's a sea urchin that lives in the North Sea, UK. I picked it up on a dive off of Sunderland. Dunno why but these are the largest I've ever seen, although I think I've heard of bigger ones off of Norway.

It's the most common urchin around the UK, well that you can see - some bury in sand so there may be more of those.

But for the UK, pretty big - must be all the Kebabs floating down the river Wear.

Ewww!

Sump with enough capacity to hold water until the break in the bulk heads where ever they are drilled and mounted; tank should be drilled give or take where you know your extra sump amount is to avoid sump over flow in case the pump inside your sump dies.

Don't see how you let your intake get clogged sir! Disapopinted

Haha yea actually my sump will never overflow. I have it set up so f if back syphond it wont fill too much. And there is a hole to break the syphon. Yea it was pretty dumb to let the prefilter on the overflow box get clogged. It was some dried seawed sheet that did me in. Luckily I caught it litterally at the moment if I had been a second later 10gals of water would been on the floor. And had a burned out return pump. LOLZ lesson learned big time.

Thanks its not that hard....yet... I have all easy corals basically. You can do it. Hardest part was learning the equipment and its purpose cuz I had never seen the innards of a SW system. But so far so good. No dead corals so Im happy.

Is there any 'unfloodable' sump design out there?

I suspect not because of the nature simply pumping and syphoning water about. Power cuts yes, blockages, maybe not...

Nice tank, btw and I like the urchin :)

And the doggie :)

haha One time my bro was horsing around and barely bumped his head on the side of the tank and the hole thing shattered. Fish and wa wa everywhere. I had to run to meijer and get a new 40g that night. It was like his head hit the perfect sweet spot and the tank exploded almost like in the Duece Bigalow movie lol. All my fish made it too so that was good they just had a rough ride...
