Power head

How many GPH will i need for a 10g nano. I am not sure what is the best with not giving to much and make the sand blow everywhere but will be enough to give a good flow. also will i need 2 or 1. I can on just using a HOB for a little movement as well

I went for 2x in my tank but usually 5 x is better as far as I know. Will the power head be connected to any filtration or just there to move water?

Depends what you are keeping, corals(what type)? fish only with live rock? fish only?

Either way I would go with koralia pumps, they are the best for the money. I would start with buying one koralia nano 425gph pump, and then see how that is for you particular tank. You are probably going to want 2 pumps with any setup, too keep debris from settling.

well i was wanting mostly a FOWLR tank.

Sorry koralia has been renaming pumps, the now nano 425gph is pretty much the same for as the koralia 1. The old koralia nano was more like 240gph.

But yes, 425gph or more in a 10g isnt crazy. You have to remember koralia pumps are not like others, for instance if you stuck a magdrive 350gph in a 10g the flow would be rather crazy, but thats because the outlet is 1/2" koralia pumps move a wall of water, more like a breeze.

So start with a 240gph koralia nano for a FOWLR. Depending on what filters/skimmers you are using, I am pretty sure your gonna want more flow.

Yea sounds sounds like a crazy amount of water flow but its really not. I use 2 800gph powerheads in a 55g. I said the same thing when I was looking at powerheads too.

I am used to the mag drives ... If I put one of those on my tank I'd have water all over the ceiling

I just installed a 1250 gph power head (mag drive) ... it did a neat job of re-arranging my tank for me

best way I can describe it would be is, a maxijet 1200 is 295gph, a koralia 4 is 1200gph. If I put my hand 6" away from the koralia the water is just moving past my hand, like a breeze. If I put my hand 6" away from the mj1200 it feels like there is garden hose pushing on my hand, of course not that strong, but you get the idea.

Check out youtube there are plenty of videos showing the difference.

If you look at the design they are pretty much just a propeller with a cage around it to prevent stuff from getting sucked in. In a friends 90g mixed reef he runs two 1400gph koralia evo on a alternating wave maker, a 1200gph koralia 4 at the bottom and a ~500gph return (4,500gph total / 90g = 50x turn over). Its about perfect and for SPS he would want more.

Koralia nano 240 IMO. I actually mount that on the top of my 5.5g nano and it moves the water nicely like a breeze underwater and not a jet. New pics of the 5.5g coming soon once my new zoas stop being tempermental and start opening up again. When I got the 240 in there they started to open up and feed

They're still new to the tank, only been in there about a week. The one put in last week is starting to open up now, but my scarlet hermit has been a terror, I saw him dead next to the zoo and one of the zoo's polyps broken off as if he tried to eat it; too bad I loved that little guy. My clown fish is doing very well, he eats like a monster (I'm lucky he eats everything I give him: flakes, mysys, pellets, bloodworms, krill, bryne he even picked at an algae wafer), he's even started hosting the pump that comes with the filter, when I go in there to try and clean out un-eaten food he swims towards me and snatches it and tries to hide it behind the pump.

Today I noticed some black growth on one of my rocks (ARG) this must have happened before I went with the Koralia. I recently had this happen to a bunch of live rock I bought from an LFS because I literally forgot I had (busy life of a systems admin) so it stood in stale water and dried out; stuff stank to high heaven and there was incredible amounts of die off. I basically took a new home depot homer bucket but in a lot of salt like 1.35 SG on my hydrometer put in a aquaclear 30 & 20 power head and cooked the rock for 4 weeks with a top on the bucket, water changed once a week for 4 weeks and not only was all the rock free of the black cyanobacteria the water didn't smell at all. Now I have that as back up cured live rock sitting in a 5 gallon tank with a power head, chemical filter on an 8 hour light cycle. Looks like I'm going to have to cook some of the rock in 5.5, hope I don't restart the cycle
