Young Ceylon on Marine

Hi all!,

I have two questions.

After reading the topic about young GSP's on marine, which I found very interesting and learnfull btw, I am wondering at what age it is save to keep an Ceylon on marine. My little Ceylon, Snips, is now about 2.5 inches in length and he has been on a stable 1.015 for the last 3 months but I would really like to bring the tank to marine levels.

The reason I want to bring Snips to marine level btw is because I want to combine my current brackish tank with my current marine tank. And put my Ceylon and Valentini in the same reef. So this would bring me to my second question: Will it be save to put both puffer in the same reef? From my own experience I have notice both my Valentini and Ceylon puffer are very easy going and gentle puffers. They never attack tankmates, never get annoyed and ignore all living things around them unless its food.

Hmm just heard a story about a ceylon killing a F8. So putting them together might not be such a good idea after all.

Still would like to know if I could keep my young Ceylon on marine tho!

I currently am keeping my Ceylons with my GSP's and they are all getting on just fine .... however, I think I read somewhere that Ceylon puffers don't do well in full marine conditions, unlike GSP's that seem to tolerate it with no problems. I am not certain about that, someone else may have better information on that ... but thought it was worth mentioning.
Just to say, my GSP's are much smaller than my Ceylons and they've never fought or been bullied in any way. I was prepared for problems when I first put them together, as they hadn't been brought up together, but there wasn't any problems at all, none. However, as we all know, no two puffers are exactly alike, and so I suppose there could be a rogue Ceylon out there that might beat up and hurt another puffer. I don't happen to think that's the general personality of a Ceylon, but I guess it could happen.

My adult Ceylon was kept with 2 GSPs in SW for several years.

One of my Ceylons, "Yorkie", I think must be an adult, he's quite large, the other two I think might still be growing.

Ah well, there you go .... PP kept her Ceylon in saltwater. I thought I read somewhere about them not preferring such a high SG.

I haven't kept them myself, but I think many people have kept them in full marine no problem. I'd say go ahead and try it... will they be going into a different tank? If you can keep the brackish tank setup for a bit just in case he doesn't like it, then do that if you can, but my guess is he will be fine.

As far as aggression, you just never know. If either of these fish is in the tank that is going to be the future combined tank, move some rockwork, decor, etc around so its "new" territory for them both, and keep a very close eye out. I would think if anyone would cause problems it would be the Ceylon, but you just never know.

you might be thinking about the Sabs. Someone was talking about keeping theirs at lowend BW.

Well eventually I will be buying a 1000 liter fw tank when Yoda (my fahaka) will reach an adult age....... my plan is to transform his current home, a 600 liter tank, in to a big reef which will be the new home for Snips and Obi as at that time they would have grown out their current tanks aswell.

But for now I want to house them both in Snips his current tank. So thanks for the suggestion to throw the whole decoration around and let him feel as if its new territory. I will def give that a go to stimulate a easy first encounter.

I found when I was breeding platys that if there was a aggresion problem between males I could take the aggreser out, move stuff around, and a hour or so later put him back in. This would, most of the time, do a roll reversal and normally settled things down. It might work with puffers aswell.

I had to do that with my African mudskippers too. If I brought home a new one, I'd take the big old guy out, move a few things, put the new one in and then put the old guy back in. That way it wasn't HIS territory anymore.
