Crabs

Post by lilacamy931 »

Hello Peeps
Im interested in getting one or two land crabs as pets as find them cute and unusual Im reading around the web but could do with pointers. What would be a easy first time crab? I have been looking at hermit and would like easy care if at all possible?

Sorry to side track but I picked up two Hawaiian reef hermits yesterday that are too cool. Some of the coolest marine hermits I've seen. Regular land hermits would probably be the way to go for you. If they're even close to as comical as marine hermits, you'll love em.

Having looked further I think the hermit crab will be a good first land pet. Only question is reading should keep two or more as socail creatures and would two be ok in a 17-23 litre? Also little confused (whats new), is it ok on the following setup?

Sand substrate enough to bury and play, bowls of fresh dechlorinated water and play things, to demist often and keep the humidity up?

I used to have the Rainbow land crabs .... but don't have them anymore. I needed the tank at the time, and so I rehomed them. However, I've just recently fallen in love with a new type of land crab -- that's the 'Vampire crab'. Thing is, these little guys don't get anywhere near as big as the Rainbow crabs, and also, from what I've read, don't cannibalise one another (which is always a possibility with most crabs). These Vampire crabs also hatch out perfectly formed little crablettes that look just like the adults, not some larval stage that needs to redevelop before it looks like a crab.
From what I've read these Vampire crabs are from forests near streams, so they want more land than water, although all the LFS's that I've seen them at are keeping them as if they are an aquatic crab - and they aren't. So I may be getting some next week, which gives me time to set up another tank and get ready for them.
Take a look on Google Amy, they are sooooo cute!

They probably won't be sent out until Monday, so I would think either Tuesday or Wednesday I will get them, if I order them, which I am thinking I probably will. :)

I love the baby blue and orange eye stalks and the one half black and white giant claw. They are so random and so cool looking. He put on the shell he currently is wearing as soon as he hit the bottom of my tank. So did his buddy. They must have been soo ready for a new house. Lol.
EDIT: Ok, his brother came out.

Now you got me playing with the camera. Heres a pic of a red leg. I thought it was kind of a cool lookin pic.
