I want Green Spot Puffers...

Post by kENNY »

Before I go any further please note this is in the PREPARING stages since my 55 hasn't even been tore down yet & I don't want you guys thinking I'm asking AFTER I got them...lol.

Alittle back story:

I had my tanks all planned out PERFECT...5.5 would be SW, 10 would be for a DP & the RCS, 29 for F-8 Puffers & BBGs, & 55 for community. Then I found it. A 72gal Bowfront "garden" setup. pressurized Co2, T5-HO lights, Fluval FX5 canister filter, etc for the best price you could ever ask for; for it[250$]. Ok...so that tank is going to be my community and I now have the 55gal free and I remembered while I really like F-8 Puffers & BBG's, I'd have to special order them & the BBG's were picky eaters...so I just put the 55 as "EMPTY" on my plans, got rid of the idea of a 5.5gal Nano-Reef and decided on the 29gal being a nano-reef. Since the 10 exists; it stays as-is for a Dwarf Puffer.

Still with me? OK...my question:

Can 2 Green Spot Puffers live in a 55gal permanently as a high-end brackish setup? I want to have a divider for the h*ll of it[it won't be in the tank at all times; just as needed; if ever] because if one isn't feeling good; I *REALLY* don't want the other one picking on/killing it...but I can keep it maintained; fishless cycle it; make sure to not let the WM people net them [use cups] & put them in separate bags...

My tanks will be:

72gal Community
55gal Brackish
29gal Nano-Reef
& 10gal Community [+ the 5.5gal tank that will stay alive as long as Wendigo & Pearl do]

Thanks!

My bumblebee gobies are anything but picky eaters. They'll try to eat anything, including foods much larger than they can fit in their mouth.

lol; I'm convinced I want GSP's because of the fact they are actually local to me...

BBG's are awesome fish though and I'm glad to hear yours aren't that picky. :D

They will be fine in the 55g for some time but you might want to eventually move them up to the 72g, when you see how big they get & how much they swim. I never had any aggression issues with my 2. They were brought up together as juvies.

PP: Thanks! If I get sick of the 72gal being a community; will do! :) You kept yours permanently in a 55gal though right? Would 1 be OK in the 55 or same deal with upgrading over time? Do they get...lonely...[I know weird question for puffer; but I wonder if they need SOME kind of interaction?]

xray: I really am infatuated with these puffers and could stare at them for hours in WalMart. lol Not that I don't like the other puffs, it's just I see how these interact with each other & me and I can actually get to know them before I buy them. :D Shipping just leaves too much room for incompatibility and hatred on both ends. I have had fish who hate me before and had to deal with them living for a few years and it wasn't fun. :?

Green spotted puffs are the best.. I have two myself. They are so adorable. I haven't seen them anywhere but walmart. The only thing is last night i went on greenspottedpuffer.net and it is said the conditions that they are kept in at walmart. I think i will write a letter asking them to take better care of the puffers that they carry and to stop ordering so many of them. :)

I did but felt they needed more room & re-homed them.

My sister and I spent quite some time in front of the GSP tanks at the pet store yesterday. The LFS we were at keeps them in brackish, and they were all less than 1" long. They were quite brightly colored, active, with the cutest little dots... They all looked so healthy too. If it wouldn't mean buying yet ANOTHER tank in addition to the ones I have, and one I need to buy - I'd definitely LOVE to have one.

Our WM actually takes really good care of them; despite the fact they are in FW[they are very plump, white bellied, tanks clean of both algae & poop, & usually have a plant in with them that makes hiding places oh and there have never been any dead ones I've know about.]. Since they are small and sell fast; I don't think them being in FW is a problem; but it'd be cool to have a care sheet up there on them so people can know what they are getting into and know what they NEED.

:D Thanks! I wonder if they'd allow that? I mean they'd probably would be OK with that since they take such good care of them but they are there to sell fish; not exactly provide 100% of the info on them...

For maximum entertainment, try dropping an earthworm or two in with the walmart GSPs. I get my feeders worms from the fridge in the sporting goods section of walmart, and visit the puffers on the way out.
