I don't think there is any accurate way of telling male from female by their appearance.

Hi, just got back on the forum after a long stretch at work. I have a pair of hairy puffers that is showing spawning behavior, although they are not proven breeders (yet).
With my pair, there is no difference in the amount of "hairiness" between the male and female. The only physical differences I have noticed is that the female's body is more rounded and the male is more slender, and the male has a brighter yellow belly, whereas the female's belly is more brownish.
I have quite a few pics on my thread on the breeding forum, but none which really show the difference between the two puffers. The next chance I get, I will try to get some pics of both puffers that show the difference in body shape and belly color.

It could just be differences in the individual puffers unrelated to their sex, but it'd be cool if it is.

There used to be a myth that the amount of hair determined sex, but that's been unproven.
