Can this work?

Post by lilacamy931 »

Right...not sure if good but I have the gorgeous Nooki in the 100g tank all to himself and I am happy with this. But just saw someone's profile as having sharks and fahaka together, is this even possible? I know little on the sharks as to their behaviour, all I really know is they get large, way larger and one of those fish people like the look of and missold by the stores. Also know fahakas are aggressive and tempramental as to whether they would work with anything. I guess I had a sudden thought on this as my other half has always LOVED these fish and wonder if they would live happily in the 100g to go for some and try with Nooki. My main concern is the sharks behaviour? I know this may seem a little random but always trying to get fish to keep my beloved happy too (though he couldnt be more frilled with Nooki!)

I'm pretty sure I've seen videos online of sharks in with fahakas... However I know I wouldn't trust my fahaka with anything other fish that I cared for. All it would take is an inkling of an idea or instinct to kill it. I think I also read somewhere that if they are well fed, the fahaka may leave some tank mates (such as the sharks) alone, but I'd worry about a midnight snack. I'm by no means an expert, just my opinion. You might get it to work, but I wouldn't get upset if it didn't.

I don't think it would be fair to the shark. Fahakas are unpredictable and aggressive, bad combination for any other living thing in the tank with them. I would not put anything alive in the tank with my Fahaka, unless I expected Obie to eat it.

Just my opinion, besides, most real sharks are marine fish.

I was tempted with what I suspect you call a 'Shark', yesterday. This was the catfish Pangasius sutchi but didn't buy any for my indoor stock vat because I know they can easily get a couple of feet long.

I think the 'Paroon Shark' or Pangasius santewongi gets to a couple of metres

Bought a couple of paradise fish instead. These are anabantoids (gourami's) and were probably the first tropical fish imported to the UK in about 1870. The pacu in my vat didn't eat them :)

Then there are 'Bala Sharks' , 'Black Sharks' etc - these come from different families.

I'd quite like a 'Goblin Shark' - they glow in the dark 8)

We seen a real shark yesterday at a shop in Doncaster, it was beautiful, but also £125!! And I could see it growing to 4-5 feet quickly. Would have to have a huge tank for such a fish, and really, I don't believe they should be captive, but that's just me. :?

What was that? Extra cool.

A bamboo stripey dogfish? Or a baby nurse shark?

The Blue Reef aquarium here has a trio of Blacktip reef sharks but then their tank is about the size of a tennis court - 50,000g easily.

I've never seen a shark underwater, but they might have seen me :) The only ones I'm scared of are silkies or oceanic white tips because they are so inquisitive.

Just adding this for interest: I've dived with a pod of maybe thirty wild bottlenose dolphins in the red sea, babies and all - I had the distinct impression they were laughing at me for being so cumbersome with all my gear on. Especially the big female who gave me a head on 'sonar scan' - I could feel the air in my lings reverberating. Came up with not even one bar in my tank on that one!

Bull sharks are the one's to be frightened of but I still think the most dangerous thing in the water is ME if you happen to be my buddy and I've run out of air

Ah sorry for the confusion guys, I couldnt think of the name at the time, but I was thinking of the bala shark, the freshwater fish that have those black tipped dorsal fins but are certainly more docile than actual sharks! The goblin shark? Definately going to have to google some of these names as havent heard of most lol, always intrigued to see species havent heard of :)

No probs, I wonder if Bala's might work - they are extremely quick. But there's always the chance a Fahaka will demolish them. Very cute to us but total nasties to other fish.

About the only fish I can think of who is nastier than a Fahaka is a marine undulate trigger. They'll attack the fishkeeper for the fun of it!

Goblin sharks are fish from a couple of click down in the ocean. Very little is known about them and only a few have ever been trawled up. They are only a couple of feet long and have a cartilaginous protrusion on their heads like a baseball cap. Very weird :)

Thanks for the help. I have let my partner know the views and facts and will leave the ball in his court if he wishes to try it. I personally am loving my little blimp which I hope grows quickly, though as long as he is healthy I am good :)

To be honest, I can't remember the name of the shark, but it was white with brownish markings on it. Very pretty. The one they had was about 2 -1/2 maybe 3-feet long. I just felt sorry for it seeing it was in what I consider a very small tank with 2 Moray eels. :(

I ended up getting another blue crayfish, going to see if my other one will allow it to live in the same tank. :)

That place in Doncaster had loads of crayfish, but at £7.50 each, I am not feeding them to my puffers. I just like them and really would like to think I could get some babies, but I won't hold my breath on that one.
I suppose we do have a certain amount of variety up here .... although it seems to come and go, not stay consistent. I've purposefully not been looking for puffers because I feel that I have more than enough to keep me busy -- still keeping an eye out for the elusive "Fang's puffer" though. :D

I think I could be persuaded to get another 'Yabbie' or blue claw cray. This one is truly trop and has no chance of surviving if it got into the wild in the UK.

It's the only one we are allowed. Oddly, we are allowed any Snakeheads here, probably for the same reasons. :)

PPG - I can't tell for certain but it sounds like a nearly full grown 'cat' shark. There are 350 species of shark!

Reading your descripton again, maybe an adult 'Bamboo' shark - these belong to what we would call a 'dogfish' group. Was he sitting on the bottom of the tank?

Hey all,

Its threads like this that confuse me. Everyone on here says a Fahaka will kill anything put in the tank with them, I have tried putting ghost shrimp, as well as diff fish, and all samson does is turn dark and hide, totally leaves them be. I was told by darkstorm samson killed 6 of his own kind at the LFS, but he has
shown hardly any aggression since I have gotten him.. am I missin something? Or is it because hes still young?

Don

PS: Sorry to hi-jack yet again :P

Mr Soggy -- I'm not going to pretend that I know alot about sharks, but back when I was a kid (after Jaws came out), I did some home-research and learned a little about sharks.
Strangely enough, I thought the shark we seen was a "dogfish", even said to the husband that's what I thought it was. He said there wasn't any name on the label, just "shark £125", and yes, he was sitting on the bottom of the tank (looking very unhappy in my mind).

Don -- my answer is that puffers are very unpredictable, and Fahakas even more so. I think you might get them to accept a tank mate, seem like all is well and then come home one day to a massacre. And that's why I wouldn't risk putting anything else in with my Obie.
