Peruvian/south american puffers (Colomesus asellus)

I just got 4 of these today, as I am having a Puffer only setup in my 55 gallon. I haven't seen any threads about these guys on here yet--anyone have them? Thoughts, opinions etc.? Thanks!!

Lots of our members have them. Search the forum for SAP, "South American", or the scientific name and I'm pretty sure you will find lots of threads discussing this puffer. You should also check out the SAP article in our library: http://www.thepufferforum.com/articles/ ... uffer.html

Is there a way to tell the sex of these puffers? I have looked online, and found nothing thus far--thanks!

Sap's are notorious for overgrown teeth. Some here have had to do little trimming by feeding a 90% snail diet.

Yeah, im going to have that problem with my modestus too. I cant provide that many snails, so Ill be trimming teeth. Im glad I only have 1 though! ( he is kinda big) At least Ill learn a lot by trimming the teeth, because i want to write a book about puffers.( in fact I actually am right now)

Sap's are notorious for overgrown teeth. Some here have had to do little trimming by feeding a 90% snail diet.

You'd need a serious breeding system, to keep 4 of them in snails everyday!

I've kept quite a few of them, but have never spotted any indications of gender.

I am not having luck with snails today--I went to my local Petsmart and petco, and came up empty

. The jerkoff at Petsmart wouldn't give me any snails, or even let me buy any! He said they just throw out the pest snails, but he can't give them to me. He said "go to petco, maybe they're stupid enough to give them to you". What a dilsnit!!! So I went to petco, and they really had very few to none.

Is there any other foods to give them that keep the teeth trimmed? Or is snails the only thing? Also, is there anywhere on the net that sells pond snails, or snail eggs or anything for someone to get started with the snail breeding thing?

you can try your local aquarium society... they might have a forum where you can see if any one has snails they want to get ride of.

I see ramshorns on ebay all the time - some sellers offer you a choice of sizes, or a variety to get feeders and breeders right away.
