UPDATE: Looking for *20*g tank ideas, not 10G

I have decided recently that I am going to give my figure 8 to a friend. He's in a single 10g [still young], but I find our personalities are clashing, and I'm not really enjoying having him as a pet. He's super shy, and jumpy to the point of avoiding any person looking in the tank. He's jumped out of the tank like, 3 times from freaking out with my hands in the tank cleaning. I should have personally picked out the puffer I wanted, but I let the guy pick it for me.

So, anyways. That being said. I'm not sure if I'm getting another puffer. But I was hoping to get some ideas of something to put in my 10g.

I'm looking for a predator. Something that eats live and frozen food guppies/feederfish/crickets/shrimp/whatever interesting to watch eat And something that can stay in a 10g forever, or at least for a while. [Not dwarf puffers though, but other puffers are good].

Hm, any cool predator frogs?

How about a brackish waspfish? They only get to 3 ins

There's some in my lfs. Very cute, sort of like a microscopic grouper with big pectoral fins - quite docile.

They are predators, make no mistake. They are also sociable with each other, slow feeders I would have thought but there is a caution: they are venonous at a bit more than bee sting level but not quite stingray.

Tempting for me, even

They like low end brackish (someone might like to query that), I'd say a sandy tank substrate and lots of driftwood and any plants, plastic or not you can get.

10g for one, maybe...

Or if you are into fw, how about a leaf fish?

Your F8 is nervous, I have this problem with my scats at the moment.

It seems to be to do with not enough cover for them. I'd taken quite a bit of decor out of the tank for my trop pond leaving them feeling exposed. That will be sorted by the w/e.

Maybe you could try some more plastic plants or caves?

I agree that he might need more hiding places to make him feel more secure. He might also need more time to settle in.

Im thinking a micro tank. A scarlet badis(Dario dario)or two. possibly some Cherry shrimps, a couple mini moth catfish (Hara Jerdoni) will lurk most of the time very cool looking. a small school of micro rasboras. Not a predator but a very cool Locality tank(almost) wasp fish are cool, but you could also go with Belonesox belizanus the pike livebearer. Or some halfbeaks.

Uh, that's why I posted this in the 'Non Puffer Aquatic Discussion' part of the forum, and not the 'Freshwater Puffers Discussion' forum. So...that's really the only place I see for my type of question.

I have some hope that many of the people here are experienced enough with more than just puffers. Otherwise there wouldn't be this section, right?

I haven't found a good resource for what goes with a 10G tank, for the kind of pet that I want. If anyone has any resources for that, I'd appreciate it too.

I hope I didn't come across as rude. I just thought it was a little tedious to restrict me from asking about other fish, in a forum with people who are more advanced fish keepers.

Most of us have other fish besides puffers. My non-puffer 10g is divided for two male bettas. A planted shrimp colony sounds really nice; I want one myself someday. African dwarf frogs are very cute.

Neale Monks wrote an article on interesting 10g fish for Tropical Fish Hobbyist. I don't have online access because my subscription ran out, but you could PM him (nmonks) and I'm sure he'd be happy to fill you in.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it! The shrimp colony sounds kinda neat. I was hoping a little more for something on the predator side, even though I'm sure my options are limited, but I'm open minded to anything interesting to watch! I have a 20G community atm, which is why I'm looking for something to create some carnage in my solo 10g! haha. I have a second 10G tank, that can be used to breed shrimp, or whatever is possible to feed whatever my new guy is.

Would an African clawed frog do okay in 10G, or would it eventually get too big? I was trying to find some interesting crustaceans that are on the predatory side, found a few, but nothing really that caught my attention.

p.s. I also might want to give breeding something in the 10g a try. Depending how difficult it is. I have connections with a pet store, so I probably can sell to them. Some kind of return might be nice.

A Xenopus? I'd have thoght it would be fine given a tight fitting lid. I've tried them before and after a while my sofa started croaking

African clawed frogs get massive. Because they can reach 5", I'm guessing that they would need more of a footprint. 10g can handle their waste level, apparently, but a big frog would probably need more room to move around. http://www.ultimatebettas.com/index.php?showtopic=10663

Well, I think I'm going to upgrade my 20G community tank into a 45G tank, and probably whatever I get for my 10G can move to my 20G. Or something like that. So, at least this way, I can get something with potential for a 20G tank.

So, instead of a 10G tank, I will be looking into 20G predator species ideas. That will at least open up some options, I hope. :]
