breeding goldfish

how common is this lol??? ive just moved my 2 goldfish into a bigger tank about 3 days ago. since thenboth been acting really wierd etc, then when ive just gone to look see how they were doing, the tank is covered in eggs lol!! all over the logs n ornaments etc....10000% sure now that they are actually goldfish eggs, cos i just seen a big shower of them being dropped from the fish lol! now i dont even know which is the male + female etc, have never really looked into it cos i had no plans 2 breed them lol!! and also, they are 2 diff types of goldfish


can anyone tell me anything bout this?? is it being 2 diff kinds gonna cause problems?? and if i wanted to try raise a few babies, do i need 2 remove the eggs etc from the main tank???

I know it happens quite often in ponds, but I'm not sure how common it is in aquariums. I assume the change in environment to the larger pond was the trigger for spawning. In ponds, spawns happen in the spring when the water is warming up, so the upgrade may have somehow mimicked this change.

I think removing the eggs would be a good idea. To my knowledge, goldfish do not care for their young in any way and may eat the eggs or fry. I'd set up at least a 10g with a sponge filter. I'd google goldfish fry or look up a goldfish forum (Aquaria Central has a pond as well as a coldwater section that might have a thread covering goldfish fry rearing.

actually, you are supposed to remove the parents not the eggs. Try not to expose the eggs to air.

Now.. the question is if the eggs are fertilized or not. Only time will tell.

I changed a few hundred gallons on my outdoor pond last night, adding cold tap (and an entire bottle of dechlorinator). This morning I went out to check on the rabbit and the goldies were all spawning Comets, commons, shubs - all of 'em.

Oddly, the girls at the front of the pack were 'scraps' a fish who once had no tail due to finrot and a white tripletail who's about fifteen years old!

The koi were following them around, eating the eggs, so I managed to net some and transfer them to a tub that I have a small water lilly in and loads of cyclops. Maybe, maybe, there will be some hatchlings but I won't hold my breath. I was careful about not exposing to air - netted the eggs straight into a jug. If any do hatch, there will be a huge quantity of natural, veggie gut loaded live food for them. Some of these cyclops are smaller than baby brine shrimp

took some eggs out the day they were born, put em in a little tub with few drops methylene blue same as i did for the puff babies, n so far around 20 have hatched

and as for avaoiding exposure 2 air, the easiest way ive found to move eggs is with a pipette they never leave water then

I tried something similar but my eggs were really fat and sticky. I would have had to move the parents.

yep they are sticky aint they!! i didnt manage topick up eggs that were on the logs or glass or anything, just the 1s that they had dropped on the sand found a couple of hatched babes in the parents tank aswell, so took them out the same way i got the eggs. didnt expect them 2 be quite so small lol!! skinny little things aint they!
