Interested in buying a valentini puffer

after looking at all the species of puffers and being very impatient about waiting to afford a tank big enough for a porcupine puffer, tear. I have decided a valentini puffer is appropriate for me. I currently have a eclipse 30gal tank, and with research there saying (online ) max tank size for valentini puffer is 20 or 30gal... if I'm correct in stating that. Now eclipse has a bio wheel on the top hood etc and top filter which I am sure isn't enough esp for salt water. So I would still need a sump, skimmer treating this as if it was a 120gal tank but obviously smaller? I see some peoples tanks have live coral being kept with a velentini? but not being an expert on saltwater, should I just keep to live rock?
I must say I love this forum it's great esp since I don't trust my lfs. Along the way when I am all set up and ready, I will surely be asking you guys what online website I could buy my valentini puffer since I know you guys care for fish as you would for humans, or if anyone knows a good Manhattan fish store where I could purchase one.

You don't necissarily need to use a sump - I'd get rid of the biowheel, replace the eclipse cartridge with purigen, chemi-pure, biochemzorb, or a combination, and get an in-tank nanoskimmer. You could probably do low light corals like mushrooms with the stock lighting, if you did 50/50 on the bulbs, too. Stock the thing up with argonite sand and a bunch of live rock, and it should work well for a valentini.

I just picked up my Valentini puffer and have a 30g tank. I use an in-tank protein skimmer and a biowheel 200. I have about 20lbs of live rock and at this piont do not have a sump. I find that this setup keeps the amonia, nitrite and nitrate at 0, 0, 10-15.

i persoanlly would not recommend any coral for a puffer for the main reason that the puffer may eat it. i already see my valentini picking at my live rock and there is no coral on it. specifically do not add an anemone since this usually results in a bad outcome, whether to the puffer, anemone or both!

Get a marineland magnum =) I have one on my 12gallon.the filter is for a 55gallon works amazing.

Don't bother with a canister filter. Live rock & skimmer is all you need. 1st get 30+ lbs of LR. Let it cycle thoroughly for a month or more. When the algae starts growing add grazers (blue legged hermits work well). Wait until they've cleared up the algae (another month). Add corals. Wait for them to establish for another month or 2. Then add fish to a HEALTHY tank!

All good info. Each puffer is different. He may or may not eat your corals. I have read a lot about keeping this puffer type myself. You can only observe and see what yours does.

I'm not sure whee you got that post but it is not for adding puffers. There are no reef safe puffers. You may be able to keep some soft corals but that would be about it. I also think any puffer would eat a CUC.

I am by no means saying they are reef safe. I merely stated I have read stories from keepers of tobys that have experienced both sides of the coin. As any puffer keeper knows, they all have individual personalities. The only reason I even stated such was you clearly said ADD CORALS to a tank that he intends to keep a puffer in.
