Canthigaster Leoparda

Post by KorrepZ »

I was wondering why the Canthigaster Leoparda is not recognized by any puffer community site. It's missing from the database on TPF aswell as my own dutch pufferforum the NKF.

Is there any reason why this puffer is being "ignored"? Is it a cross-breed that does not exist in the wild? Is the Leoparda not scientifical recognized?

You see them for sale at LFS more and more but we as pufferlovers know very little about the Leoparda and there are hardly any topic about it on this forum or any other pufferforum for that matter.

They have such a beautiful print!

They are gorgeous but none of us have kept one, I guess. Not readily available around here.

It only appeared since about 2 years in trade regularly. I've seen it in wholesale a number of times. There's a good article on the aquarium care of this species in coral magazine by Prof. Ellen Thaler, it will soon be available in English.

At the LFS where I work we had one about a month ago. I would have got it but my tab is too high to put a whole new tank with live rock in it, and all my other tanks are unsuitable, mainly because they already have a puffer in them. It was gorgeous. It didn't do well, unfortunately, and died a few days after we got it in, the day I had decided to get it anyway and use a divider temporarily. What blows me away is the very fact that we got one here in Missouri! We're lucky to even get ANY puffers, period, other than dogfaces and GSPs.

If you look around, you can find some info on them, but not much. I can't remember where I found info on it, but my regular sites are fishbase.org and badmanstropicalfish, plus whatever else Google or Bing brings up. I believe I read on one site that they are not from the shallows, that they prefer deeper water. Don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure I read it because it kind of stuck out in my mind as being interesting.

There's one in stock on LiveAquaria right now.

Could be a good opportunity for one of TPF's members to get one and conduct a study on these guys for our database (pufferpedia).

This would be under the tab titled 'Diver's Den,' by the way. There are a fair few puffers on there at the moment.

This month Coral Magazine featured all tobies in the issue. The one cited above was also included (Prof. Ellen Thaler), with an excellent description of how to keep them and what to expect. http://www.coralmagazineus.com/ They've got me wanting tobies now :D
