What is a twin spot puffer?-with pics

I finally found a store that has some freshwater puffers...of course they do not know what they are called ..but from their descriptions they have GSPs, Mods or silus, dwarfs...

But they had another puff that they said was 4-5inches, was piscivorous and they called it a twin spot puffer...any idea what this puff might be?

"Twin-spot" is usually a name for figure eights. But obviously, the physical description doesn't match.

I thought about F8..but the guy swore it was at least 4-5 inches (since the guy did not know the name, he probably was not experienced enough to know the do not include the tail rule)..but that would still make the puff bigger than a figure 8...plus it was eating live feeder fish..

I wonder if I got that puff...is it a picky eater...could I put him onto dead foods/live worms and snails?

F8s will eat feeder fish if that's what they're used to or it's all that's available.

I will find out this weekend...hopefully it will still be there.....

Puffers in my area are extremely rare..one LFS told me they had problems getting them too..

I have always wanted dwarfs and silus..and now this possible fangs..Yikes, I only have one empty tank available...

4-5 Inches. Seems a bit big for a fangs. Most likely another member of the target family though

I agree... I was just taking a guess, but reading how violent Fangs were, that was what first came to mind.

I think the Twinspot would definitely be a target species of some kind. Don't trust the LFS for ID.

Its a pretty good guess, it could be an XL fangs or an XL Abei, or the guy has weird ideas on what 4-5 inch is.

Cambodigensis or Leiurus could be a possibility if they have a very long snout, dont see them too often though.

Ok, I went down to this new pet store to go have a look..

As far as freshies, all they had left were two dwarfs (almost fry-big as a fingernail) and the "twin spot" ...

This was an impulse thing so I did not have my camera..but hubby had his phone camera an got a few TERRIBLE pictures of this puff..put at least you guys will be able to rule out a few puff species.

They wanted $30 for the twin spot..but they do not offer a guarantee on fish over $10..and I have a few concerns..

First off this puff is being kept in cold water..so she is almost always permanently black She also has one very ragged side fin and her tail is ragged as well..She also has some puff bites..Over all she seems miserable...BUT I will say that the store, as far as LFS go, is not that bad or mistreating her(aside from the cold water)-they have only had her for a week.

Ok, she has grabbed my heart..but I am just so unsure..

Her tank was at the bottom..and I just kept coming back and talking to her..I even opened up her tank and stuck my hand in to play with her..

I was there for an hour..looking at everything..and I kept coming back to see her...and eventually she started getting lighter when she would see me coming

When she would get lighter.. she turned a nice olive green..and her big "twin spots" were black

She turned black for the pics..because my husband took them..and she does not seem to like him LOL






I did end up taking their last two dwarf puffs home-will get pics up soon
and a white blood parrot fry

I just want to make sure of what type of puff she is before I commit any more of my heart

The middle picture shows her jacked up fin...

The pic is bad..put in person..it is just the fin that is affected..no swelling or color change..I am thinking melafix

Also..I could not see directly into the eyes...the eyes looked like they were for night vision...

And the body shape is a little unique...

I have an idea of what it might be...but I am not sure..

Well from what I can see form the pics the snout is nowhere near long enough for Monotrete Cambodigensis,have a look in the Pufferpedia at that one and compare as you have seen it in the flesh. Looks more like a big Cochinchinensis than anything else.
