Started Ramshorn/Ghost Shrimp Tank

Started a 20g Ramshorn/Ghost Shrimp Tank today. Females already holding eggs. Supposedly they breed very well together without little to no effort. Still gotta get a 30g to breed some Marbled Crayfish for Dog Faced Puffer but for now this will be decent stock for GSP.

lol they are loving some algae chips I put in, along with a strip of Nori and some tropical fish flakes for the shrimp. They are all going to town

Ghost shrimp will eat your rams eggs/young and have no problems cannibalizing their own young. You knew that.....right? Little buggers.

I have never heard of shrimp eating snail eggs. Eating their own yes... but only if under fed. I may be wrong, but this is the first time I have heard of the snail egg thing.

Oh, they will absolutely eat them and the snails themselves. I've sat and watched the little buggers do it. And read it in a few places. Heck, if you look on AquaBid right now someone is selling snails and in the listing goes into detail about using them to feed to ghost shrimp.

which claims its a myth that ghost shrimp eat their own young. It says just provide good hiding and make sure to feed them well. As for eating snails, we'll see how that goes. If all else, not to much trouble to change tanks.

The eating their own young thing I have only read. It was an article about breeding them and they said to separate them soon after they drop the eggs off because they had no qualms about eating them. Once again the snail part I have been witness to. I buy ghost shrimp weekly to feed my f8s. Its cheaper to buy 10-12 at a time depending where you go. Well one medium to large shrimp is plenty for one f8's dinner. So I threw the extras into my snail tank for holding. Mistake. I only did it once. I hope you dont think I'm trying to argue, just trying to help. One last example. I keep many small snails in my dwarf tank so they can hunt whenever they like. I seen one of them hit a snail from the bottom side the other day while it was moving across a plant. It fell to the substrate and the single, small ghost that shares the tank with them rushed over and stole the snail. He sat and and held it upside down and picked out little bits of soft flesh, jamming them into his maw. Somehow I dont think it was a friendly social call. Lol.

It was about one and a half times the size of a full grown f8's eye. Not an adult snail but not tiny either. Easily a third the size of the ghost shrimp eating it. This was a common snail not a ramshorn. But I dont think that will matter.

It was about one and a half times the size of a full grown f8's eye. Not an adult snail but not tiny either. Easily a third the size of the ghost shrimp eating it. This was a common snail not a ramshorn. But I dont think that will matter.

Hmm... I'll have to keep an eye on this. I may just end up seperating them then

Scouring the substrate as it moves along, jamming its little limbs into every crack and crevice and when it finds something, anything...it goes into its mouth. If it runs across some nice soft, squishy material that smells good and fits in its mouth....its gonna eat it.

lol i was eating something, kind of off topic but you might like it. They don't 'quite' have a mouth. They have a hole in their chest that they cram the food into that goes into a tube that wraps up by their eyes then down to their stomach.
