RIP GARY The Apple Snail

Sup all,

I did a search on google and I couldn't find an answer to the question I have so I thought I would post it here?.

The question is this?, Will my Apple snail be okay in a pond snail tank? I am breeding pond snails, and I would like to free up the tank the apple snail is in?

Apple snails would prefer cleaner water than is easy to get away with in a snail breeder, but if you keep the tank clean, it should be fine.

The 2.6 breeder has a filter on it. I just thought i could save some space?

I would like to continue on this question...

My pond snails are not breeding nearly as quickly as I had hoped. Any recommendations as to what snails are quick breeding + quick growing?

J-P -- I think the answer to your question has to be ramshorn. They breed like crazy and grow fairly quickly too. I bought some pond snails a while back, but they've still not taken off like the ramshorn have. I thought my puffers would like a little snail variety, but it's difficult to find a snail that proliferates as nicely as the ramshorn . I'm still waiting for the population explosion to happen with the pond snails.

Yea apple snails do eat other snail eggs. So that would defeat the purpose of the pond snail breeding tank. Why can't you keep him with the new tank mates. He would make a good cleaner for em.

The prob i have is every tank i have is a species only, i have an Oscar that likes to play with him, a Fahaka that would eat him and a DP that likes to nip at him, all I have other then my 2.6 is unfiltered 1-2 Gal tanks

I am thinking my DP nipped him a bit to much, he couldn't recover, He didn't come out of his shell for over a week, he fell off the side last night, and his door was open, he's gone, poor little guy.
all this death is making me think I should give up on fish keeping

I'm really sorry to hear about your snail passing away Don, that's awful. Something similar happened to the one Apple snail I kept after I got rid of the others. I think the DP's just stressed mine out too much and it couldn't handle it, and that's probably what happened to yours as well.

Listen, I've had my fair share of death since my start with keeping puffers .... and there was a time when I thought I would bow out because of all the death and disappointment, but I'm glad I didn't because I wouldn't have had all the wonderful experiences that I've had since then. I think most people who keep fish have felt like giving up when death overwhelms them, and unfortunately the death part of fish-keeping is one of those things that we can't do anything about, and happens with even the best fish-keeper. This is a learning process for all of us, don't give up, just try to make better choices (having a tank with fish that won't stress or hurt an Apple snail in the future, etc.).

Keep on pushing Don, there's so much more to make you smile, and I think the good well out-weighs the bad!

I think you should keep going ahead with fish. You're a good fish daddy. I do want to say though that it really seems like you jump into things without thinking of the long term effects and fully planning things out. I think that if you slow down, do more research, house them in large enough tanks, and stop any impulsive buying then you'll be a lot more successful Don't stop, just try to be more controlled You take good care of your pets and its obvious you care about them.

I totally agree with you BOTH

but it is very hard when you dont have someone that enjoys the hoddy as much as you do?, My wife tolerates the tanks I do have, 90% of the reason I gave up my tanks was she complained about the
noise and cost. but you are right, no more impluse buying, if I dont have a tank setup, I won't buy anything else, i can't stand the pain i feel when something dies, its to heart breaking.
I will keep what I have for now, and see how I feel, I can't even fathom the idea of another Shiz zu puppy, as I lost my Randy after 16 years of having her, its been 5 years, and I still miss her..My wife offered to buy me one for my B-day next month, but my heart can't do it. So I dont see myself buying another snail or betta

That's alright Don, those feelings are completely understandable.

If you do ever get another betta you now know more about them and will be able to hopefully avoid what happened to Mr H. Only move on to another pet when you're ready, only you will know when that time is. Doesn't matter if it takes 5 minutes or 50 years

I'd also like to add, and I hope I'm not getting too personal here .... but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry your wife doesn't share your love and interest in fish/puffers, but if keeping fish/puffers really makes you happy, then I think you need to stand your ground and come to some arrangement that works for both of you. Perhaps you can claim one room of the house for your tanks, so she doesn't have to hear them. But everyone needs something, some hobby .... and I think you should do what makes you happy.

Of course, this is only my opinion.
